I unfortunately have to work for a living but would love to get some credentials behind my 14 yrs experience in GD. Anyone know who offers reputable part-time courses in Jhb?

Invest your money in books-
Although there are a few part time courses you could do, it would be best to invest your money in buying the latest contemporary design books and devoting your time to self study. Think of the library you could build up with the R6000 you are planning on spending on a course.

A qualification can look good on your CV, but unless you have a super hot portfolio you won't secure a great design job. Feed your mind with pure design from all around the world. Explore and experiment with different styles and techniques. Chat with other creatives in online forums. There are some brilliant design websites, just do your research.

If you want to attend a training course, build on your software knowledge. The Adobe Creative Suite (CS) is vital as well as knowledge of Freehand. Most importantly explore, play and create whilst building a great portfolio. Posted on 26 Jan 2007 07:16
AAA School of Advertising runs good courses BUT-
experience still beats certificates. Posted on 2 Feb 2007 12:16
INTEC-
I am studying graphic design through intec. A correspondence graphic design course certainly has its flaws like tutor feedback (you really need someone in the flesh) but it concentrates on drawing (most of the assignments you are not allowed to use a computer) and so this is a solid foundation with the good notes and very interesting assignments. If you want to go the book route try a well known designers site and they usually will have a book list Posted on 19 Feb 2007 11:53
Graphic Design Diploma - Part-Time-
I'm in the same boat as you. im employed as a senior graphic designer for an advertising agency but because of my lack of a Diploma, im earning peanuts. I have tried every reputable insitution but they are not offering the diploma on a part-time basis and this is driving me out of my mind. I'm appealing to companies to consider employing us on the 'what can you do' as opposed to 'what do you have' principle. I possess every book there is but sadly one can't afford luxuries like an Apple Mac. Posted on 27 Mar 2007 10:34

There are part time courses for everything why not graphic design?-
I agree.

We need colleges that teach graphic design part time and internationally recognized and that teaches all software not how to draw.

There are part time courses for almost anything why not for graphic design. We all have to work to survive . How come nobody offers good internationally recognized graphic design courses? A good course that is after hours and teaches you computer literacy with regards to graphic design and not how to draw . Most of us already have that skill . This is what people are looking for. Somebody please tell us where in the world can we study graphic design part time, internationally recognized and an institution that teaches you ALL the software packages. That is what we pay for and also an employer does not want to still teach the people how the software packages work. That is what we pay the expensive colleges to teach us and that is what we expect from a college to teach us. Posted on 5 Aug 2008 14:38
