Design schools in Durban

21 Jun 2004 14:4624 commentsBizLike
Are there any design schools in Durban that offer short courses covering Quark, Freehand, Photoshop and any other industry software?
I read with interest different views that people aired regarding un-employable graduates who find themselves being part of the unemployment statistics due to lack of "experience". I am unfortunately one of them and have tried to apply for all sorts of jobs, both those that I qualify for and those that I don't, hoping to strike it lucky but without success.

To avoid being a whiner who only sits and complains, I have decided to enhance my skills even further (adding to a bachelors and honours degree I've already obtained) by enrolling for a course in Desktop Design. There are two problems I'm faced with though. Firstly I don't know of any design school in Durban that offers short courses in this respect. Secondly, I do not have money to fund my studies. Can somebody please help.

CityVarsity's courses are cool-
I did the DTP course at Cityvarsity and even though I have a diploma in graphic design from the Tech I learnt so much about the industry and repro too. The lecturer was really interesting and fun too. Posted on 29 Sep 2005 12:44

Free State companies should invest in young talent-
There is a dire need for FS Marketing firms to invest in young talent be it in college or Universities.

I urge all marketing related companies in FS to take a break from thier passion of making quick cash to developing students into market relevant enrepreneurs. This, I think could be achieved by constant visits to schools and training of marketing and advertising students to take care of forever evolving opportunities.

We need to be mentored by people whom we somehow could associate with at some stage. This will motivate young potential marketers who would later make enormous contribution to the province. Posted on 22 Jun 2004 15:26

Hirt & Carter way too pricy-
The dilema of decent design courses for those who can't afford the time to attand a full time three degree has been faced by many. It's not always an issue of being lazy, as someone else posted. In my case, I am beyond entry level student age and can't afford three years off work in neither a time or money capacity.

That said, the Hirt & Carter offerings are ridiculously expensive and I found the staff to be rude and arrogant. Trying to get class info, or apple support for that matter, proved extremely frustrating as tehy acted as if they were doing me a favour. The day classes are arranged in such a way that the course is stretched over a long period, but does't make the best use of each day. i.e. mornings or afternoons, rather than just doing it full day and halving the time needed for completion. A ploy to qualify for diploma status perhaps?

What is needed is a facility that caters for training adults, and treats them with the proper degree of respect, that doesn't charge inflated corporate rates for the privelage. Posted on 14 Feb 2006 15:02

COURSES SUCK!-
Hi. Short and sweet... haven't people caught on YET??? Do your stupid short courses coz you are too damn ass lazy to study for 3 years... but it's cool, it's cool... just read the first few topics under the design forum and don't complain that you are unappreciated or unemployed!! HELLO... do you think someone will hire a person who's done a short pathetic crash course before someone who did a 3 year full time diploma??? Duhhh, I don't think so.
Let me inform you about something... when an employer gets applicant CV's, do you know what he does FIRST? He goes through them reading only the qualifications, and assuming that you know how competitive the Graphic Design market is, you should know that there are about 200 applicants for a design job, guess what makes this easy for the employer? He SIMPLY WEEDS OUT ALL THE SHORT COURSE ppl (wannabe's) who try their luck and all they have is 12 applicants who are actually qualified designers! I got this information from a known design company in Joburg that does design packaging, and the guy just wanted to tell us how THEY work it, and I wouldn't think any other company would be any different! So... still wanna do some stupid short course??? I don't think so!

Cheers and wake up ppl, the country needs more educated ppl, we have enough lazy ass, school drop outs, and criminals! Don't become one and raise your kids well not to become them ALSO!!! And DON'T SHAG before you actually are responsible enough to RAISE decent kids. Just remember if you are having sex... it means you are perfectly capable of having and raising a child... and shouldn't be surprised if it happens... if you aren't fit for it, then STOP... what the f*** are you doing?

ANyway, just some input, although I don't think this is suitable to post here seeing that this is for carreer orientated ppl, but anyway, you know how it is when you feel strongly about something, you need to get it out! And chics... STOP BEING COMPLETE SLUTS! ANyway...

Good Day and enjoy the weekend! Gotta luv ya and leave ya!

what do u know???-
OK.. so let me ask YOU this??

WHO WOULD AN EMPLOYER HIRE BETWEEN A GUY WITH A 3-YEAR DIPLOMA AND ZERO" EXPERIENCE AND A GUY WITH 2 SHORT COURSES AND 3 YEARS WORKING EXPERIENCE UNDER HIS BELT??

I doubt you've ever employed anybody.. or even spoken to an HR practitioner. The first thing employers look for is EXPERIENCE dude.. CAN YOU DO THE JOB !!! Posted on 12 Aug 2006 22:33

You goit issues buddy.-
You got some major issues buddy. Some of the most successful and richest people in the world are school drop out who don't have a degree. Most degreed people I know have a job and are working for someone, someone like a school dropout.

shame you have issues-
for somebody who thinks he is educated your langauge and grammar is disgusting. Further more most people who take short courses are already well educated people with degrees but want to stay informed regarding technological developments in this field. Posted on 9 May 2008 11:45

GREAT ADVISE!-
I really enjoyed your up-front comments .... hope those out there who need to be put straight GOT IT!

Where to from here though??? I have done a National Certificate in Information Technology (R40.000.00 for one year) which only teaches you the basics on Photoshop (amongst many other IT programmes) I really want to focus on Photoshop as I'm darn good at it!!!.. and have managed to teach myself quite a lot... but I agree with you about not going in for short courses etc. Having invested such a lot of money already only to find that I'm still "out there" sucks.... Live in Durban so would appreciate info. for this region. Help please!! DF Posted on 6 Jul 2008 08:02

BUDDY, GROW UP!-
You really do have issues. You sound like you have a lot of anger inside. GET HELP...
Employers will hire someone who can do the job, not someone who spent the most years in college. Don't hate Posted on 6 Nov 2008 13:21
Bitter & twisted-
Your comments re: short courses, is absolute rubbish. A person can elevate themselves due to how much personal effort they put into what they have learned - it has nothing to do with the course a person has done, 1 year versus 3 years is totally irrelevant. Posted on 27 Dec 2008 09:01
What a d*ck-
You are exactly the kind of person that you are describing in your rantings. So do all of us a favour , go to the toilet abd stick something nice and stinky in your mouth cause I bet it'll taste better than the BS your talking, B*aatch!! Posted on 22 Jul 2009 19:25

FYI-
Actually employers look for skill, integrity and ability to work in a team, more than anything else.
Although I cannot vouch for your design skills, I can tell from your comments that you fall short in the other 2 areas.
Out there in the real world, graduates from long courses are not usually preferred, as they have no working experience and generally believe themselves to be better than everyone around them, thus pissing their colleagues off big time.
A lot of really talented designers actually cannot afford to study at all, let alone for 3 years!!!!
I think you should take off your rose hued lenses, you spoilt brat, and look at the real world out there.
Good luck for the future and may you grow to be a better person.
From a successful, award winning, freelance designer, who has never done a single design course.... yup.... completely self taught!!!! Also a single mom and if you were my kid.... Posted on 19 Apr 2011 14:30

If you're so educated why not try thinking before blurting-
I think for you to have only one source (in joburg that may
be lacking credibility) is not so bright to jump to conclusions that you're "absolutely, one hundred and twenty five thousand million percent" right about what you're saying about people needing a 3 year course over work experience and short courses.

And what's up with your spelling and gramma if you have such a great education?

I have a marketing degree which certainly proves that I am not lazy but i don't feel like having to spend another 3 years of time, money and effort to build a future in advertising and graphic design.

An employer would have to be pretty narrow-minded just to look at your qualification and not your portfolio or creative ability. Posted on 4 Dec 2008 15:08

Just to add a response against the irratic comment put down, the person who asked the initial question already has a bachelors and honours degree to his credit which he would like to enhance further. So he's already done what you are ranting about and is looking for further studies. There's nothing lazy about that.
My company, ARCAD, provides training [Short Courses] in Autodesk software, such as AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit. These are the leading software packages used for mechanical engineering, civil, electrical and architectural design around the world, and the courses provide the student with internationally recognised certification. What they learn in three days, extended courses teach in months, and these are skills that can be learnt, practiced and applied throughout the world in the relevent industries.
So to say employers only employ people with long term diplomas is not true. It all boils down to what you do with what you've learnt. Posted on 3 Jan 2012 15:08
