Radio DJs/Club DJs vs Real Musicians

Where do we draw the line concerning radio djs who also push their own music on air?
True musicians have an unfair competition from radio presenters who also produce their own albums. These breed of 'musicians' have a platform to push their wares non-stop. While genuine musicians struggle to get airplay on the airwaves.

An example of my beef is DJ Sbu on Y, artists from his stable are guaranteed airplay on his show daily. Mzekezeke is a case in point.

There is an endless supply of talented musicians, who don't enjoy the same treatment while they produce quality music. Because none of their record execs have slots with radio stations, their products are ignored.

Why do radio stations allow such a trend, Metro fM has an awards where their own employees compete with musicians for the same recognition while they enjoy maximum exposure through their own radio slots.

Icasa has to intervene and add a clause within the licence conditions to put a stop to this bad practise.

You right-
Dj Sbu is a coniving , for himself person....i work at Yfm and i can tell you that he as a very very very good relationship with dJ Monde(who compiles the music for Yfm) and Vukile Zondi(who kisses Kanthan ass.

Artists who produce crap like Dj Sbu get their stuff played because of contacts at Yfm....

I work at Yfm but dont love the underhand dealinngs that take place. Posted on 1 Dec 2008 17:21

Talking crap-
What you dnt knw is dat sbus contract allows him 10percent of his show to use for himself. gg, if you worked at y you would know that. shud sbu be slaughtered for using his contractual benefit? blame him or the station? crap..... sbu didnt even ask 4 dat breakfast show, they head-hunted him and thus had to come up with a lucrative offer for him. that includes 10percent of air-space to use as he pleases, marketing himself and ts included. 100grand a month. plus commision on endorsements and ads via his show. so dnt beef with sbu, talk 2 his bosses.... as 4 da metro jocks, dnt gv ish about them. wena gg dnt go around claiming to be wat u aint.... we c through u. mthakati Posted on 2 Dec 2008 01:41

You are right-
Sbu has every right to use his contractual conditions to the fullest, but I do feel that it is still a conflict of interest to be a player and referee in the sam game. In corporate world one would recuse themselves in these situations maybe Sbu and all those DJ's should refrain from playing their own music and let other DJ's in their stations to play their music Posted on 2 Dec 2008 09:37
The Music Biz...-
Understand it. This is just a more contrived version of payola. Still, Mzekezeke can keep his measly 10000 copies sold :) Posted on 2 Dec 2008 08:15

Action speaks louder than words, Sbu is an achiever than you GG for sure. Posted on 2 Dec 2008 08:18

Dnt gv a damn-
Whether sbu pushes his brand and mzekezeke on his show or not, i dont care. fact of the matter is that whilst he is at it, he is also deliverying on the brief. that means, he is giving us a kick-arse breakfast show. whenever i read a forum on bizcommunity, inevitably dj sbu takes the spotlight. even those who criticize him, still listen to him. figure this out, why aint noise always made about phat joe? thomas? etc.... its because they are mundane and play by the books. sbu pushes those boundaries, deliverying a tight show in the process. so whats wrong with him bagging some spotlight and money for himself on his own show? fact is, sbus show is very distinctive from all the other breakfast shows because unlike them, he is not playing it safe. sbu, we knw that numbers dont lie. that breakfast show is currently the fastest growing in sa.... why? we love the difference and his relevance. done! Sbu vs Mansfield-
Sbu is no competition for Mansfield who delivers the most listened to and most highly influential breakfast show in Jhb and South Africa....Yfm is a community radio station...shut the station down and lets restart a fresh , new radio station that not only targets the black youth but all races. Radio DJs/Club DJs vs Real Musicians-
Hi Guys,

Commercial radio stations are just that - commercial. And for them to get revenue they have aligned themselves with personalities in the media industry. You see, radio is now about personalities. Whichever way you look at it Sbu has a massive following. That's why you would see musicians and others doubling as radio dj's. Its a win win situation, as stations benefit and dj's would also benefit from that working relationship.Whether that makes them awesome radio broadcasters that's debatable.

Who are these real musicians you are talking about? Radio is about what's is hot now. Are they marketing themselves? Posted on 3 Dec 2008 12:19
What about believing in your product??-
Shouldn't these so called musicians believe that their products are good enough for other DJ's to play? Why play yours, your wife's or girlfriends' music.

If it's that good leave it to other people to play it.

THIS IS ANOTHER VERSION OF PAYOLA. Posted on 3 Dec 2008 14:01
