In-situ geotechnical testing

2018 upcoming course.

The aim of the course is to refresh the practising engineer's knowledge of in situ testing and to introduce new developments. The tests will be limited to the most popular and widely used tests namely standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), piezocone (CPTu) and seismic tests. The test methods and procedures will be dealt with in detail. The interpretation of general strength and stiffness parameters will be discussed as well as indirect design methods based on these parameters. Direct design methods such as 'Schultze and Sherif' as well as 'Burland and Burbidge' will be covered. All the flow parameters derived from the piezocone will be discussed including the derivation of the complete phreatic regime interpretation of complete as well as incomplete dissipation tests.

Seismic tests include surface wave tests such as CSW, SASW and MASW as well as the cross-hole test, downhole test and seismic cone test. The interpretation of the test results, as well as the application of the results to geotechnical problems, will be discussed.

Postgraduate students registered for the honours degree in geotechnical engineering are required to attend the course and, in addition, successfully complete a series of assignments and pass the examination for specialised geotechnical testing SGS 789. There is no formal evaluation of other course attendees.
