Community Chest Carnival

Take a tasty trip around the world at the Community Chest Carnival

Taking the family overseas is beyond most people's budgets, but you can treat them to a culinary trip around the world in an afternoon or evening by visiting the Community Chest Carnival.

At this year's event visitors can sample authentic dishes from as far afield as China, Ireland, Holland, India, Japan, Belgium and Switzerland and as close to home as Namibia, while dancers, musicians and singers provide entertainment. Bringing the world to Cape Town is no easy feat and already the organisers are arranging how to move and store tons of cheese, half a ton of Dutch liquorice, 600 dozen eggs, 800 litres of milk for Belgium waffles, as well as sourcing fresh fish and rice for Japanese sushi and tons of other ingredients. There are also some firm South African favourites, including boerewors - over a ton of it - and 10 000 mielies and over three tons of sliced potatoes for slapchips.

Fortunately they are able to call on the help of some 7 000 volunteers who donate their time, skills and experience to ensure that this Community Chest Carnival will be better than the preceding 61. "Carnival is a celebration of cultures and diversity and the volunteers represent just about every community in Cape Town," says organiser Greg Damster. "There's also a wonderful spread of people who've been supporting Carnival for generations as well as youngsters who're participating for the first time."

As well international fare, local bands, singers and dancers provide entertainment. There are also clothing and book stalls and children's activities including jumping castles and face painting.

"It really is a festival of family fun and with family tickets available from between R25 and R50 depending on the day, we'd really urge people to enjoy it as a family outing."
