Advanced subbing

This three-day course is designed for experienced senior sub-editors or others responsible for supervising the sub-editing or copy-editing function in print or broadcast, in commercial, community or organisational media environments, or for experienced sub-editors facing promotion into such roles.

The course focuses the management of the sub-editing function, looking at recruitment, work process, work aids such as style guides, policies, training and newsroom relationships. Among several other issues, it considers:
- How is language policy for a publication made?
- What should go into a style guide and how should it be implemented?
- How does sub-editing training work under the new L5 National Certificate in Journalism?
- What are the most effective techniques for coaching or mentoring sub-editors?

The course also includes a brief update on legal issues for sub-editors. Because this is a policy and management programme, it assumes that entrants already have knowledge of the basic skills of sub-editing relevant to their fields. This is an advanced course, and basic skills are NOT covered by this course.

Combined with appropriate practice, the course will provide learning useful for those in senior sub-editing roles wishing to be assessed against the management option of the L5 National Certificate in Journalism.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an entry-level course. Space is limited, and only senior and experienced sub-editors will be accepted.
