Basic layout and design

The practical work is designed to give participants a chance to experiment with the software and apply the design principles that they will be taught.

Adobe InDesign is one of a variety of design and layout packages used worldwide to create designs for newspapers, magazines, newsletters and a wide variety of other print media. While it has been around for a while, it has really only become widely used in South Africa in the last couple of years.

It is a powerful layout programme that is designed to be used in conjunction with drawing software (Adobe Illustrator) and image editing software (Adobe Photoshop).

However, the ability to use the software does not make a person into a designer and it is important that the teaching of software goes hand-in-hand with the understanding of design principles and the ability to implement them.

During this five-day workshop, participants will learn how to work with InDesign CS2, (although some time will be spent on Illustrator and Photoshop, as they are all designed to work together), to produce a variety of print-based designs. The practical work is designed to give participants a chance to experiment with the software and apply the design principles that they will be taught.

Each will also work on a larger project that is relevant to their individual work places. As this is an introductory course, no previous experience with design software is necessary. Combined with appropriate practice, this course will provide learning useful for the attainment of the proposed MAPPP SETA Unit Standard: Applying layout and design principles to newspapers.
