Russell Loubser joined the JSE Limited as executive president designate on 1 January 1997 and assumed office as executive president on 1 February 1997. After the restructuring of the JSE in December 2000, Russell became the JSE's chief executive officer.
As CEO, Russell has been responsible for the fundamental strategic repositioning of the JSE, including its pioneering agreements with the London Stock Exchange and FTSE as well as the acquisition of the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) by the JSE. This fundamental repositioning enabled the JSE to be listed on the JSE in June 2006. In the ensuing period the share price of the JSE Limited has appreciated substantially.
Until his appointment at the JSE in 1997, he was executive director of financial markets at Rand Merchant Bank Limited (RMB). During 1987, he was part of the team which started the futures industry in South Africa. He was chairman of SAFEX for two years and deputy chairman for one year. Prior to his career in merchant banking, Russell qualified as a chartered accountant (South Africa) in 1982 while with Arthur Andersen & Co, and obtained a Mcom in statistics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Russell is an extraordinary professor in mercantile law at the University of Pretoria and was appointed to the Council of the University in 2007.
Member of the King Committee on Corporate Governance, Russell also serves on the Board of Directors of the World Federation of Exchanges and was chairman of the Exchanges' Working Committee from October 2002 to October 2004.
Russell is a keen sportsman. He has completed many standard marathons, including the Comrades, Two Oceans ultra-marathons and the Argus Cycle Tour 18 times. Russell is married to Alma and has two children.
