Corporate governance

This two-day course covers good corporate governance practices, integrated sustainability reporting, roles, duties and responsibilities of the Board etc.

The King Code of 2002 is specifically applicable to all companies listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange. It is also applicable to all insurance, banking and financial institutions. Of particular note is the fact that it also applies to all public sector enterprises that fall under the Public Finance Management Act and the Local Government Municipal Finance Management Bill.

Corporate governance is more than a watchdog role. It is the system and processes whereby directors in power make decisions about the fate of organisations, and in many cases, the quality of our lives.

In this century global corporations have more influence than governments over people's quality of lives. The increasing speed of communications, e-commerce and large mergers will continue in the future: to make the best of these changes for us, it is crucial that the human side of corporate governance develops to the same level.

The original King Report issued in 1994 on Corporate Governance was recognised internationally and especially in the developing world as the most comprehensive publication on the subject embracing the inclusive or stakeholder approach. The successor King 11 Report released 26 March 2002 takes the concept further and the code, which is a set of principles combines the current statutory, financial and regulatory requirements in South Africa has been welcomed by organised business and government. The King Report highlights the need for Chairpersons and CEO's to adjust to an evolutionary shift of corporate governance from its watchdog role to a greater focus on human aspects.
