Basic Principles of Public Relations

The Skill Professional Development Programme is aligned against unit standards.

ProVox Professional Development Programme is presented over two periods of five days each. The programme is aimed at the public relations assistant on a junior level and the secretary with a public relations component in her job. Once the learner has completed this programme he/she should be able to assist in the implementation of basic public relations, communication and media activities under supervision. A portfolio of evidence is submitted for assessment of competency.

Programme content:
• The nature of public relations - definition, techniques and functions, characteristics, ethics,
development and execution of public relations.
• Communication - the components of the communication process, the 7 Cs of communication, barriers to effective communication, telephone etiquette and improvement of listening abilities. Negotiation, debating and lobbying.
• Media liaison.
• Public speaking.
• Special functions i.e. opening ceremonies, open-house days, functions, visits, tours,
exhibitions and seminars.
• Sponsorships, marketing and promotions.

Programme format and assessments:
The lectures are from 08:30 to 16:00 each day. During the break between the first and second week, learners are required to prepare assessments. A three-hour assessment is written approximately eights weeks after the second week of lectures.

Entry requirements:
Learners must be in possession of a grade 12 (matric) certificate or the ProVox Centre Certificates in Elementary Public Relations and Basic Business Communication.

The programme fee includes notes, textbooks, assessment fees and one year's Prisa Student's Chapter membership.
