The importance of listening to your audience - 2 May 2017

[Leigh Andrews] As we enter the fifth month of the year, join me in extending a warm welcome to our new editorial assistant Juanita Pienaar, who has settled into the role with feedback on the Amasa Speaker Series, which kicked off with a talk by BrandsEye's chief marketing officer, Nic Ray. Click through for insight into the importance of mining content from online conversations for sentiment and the topics driven by this sentiment. Keeping things focused on listening to your audience, I chatted to Pierre Branco, vice president and general manager of Southern Europe and Africa for Turner to find out just how Cartoon Network is cornering kids' TV on any device. He explained children's evolving TV viewing habits, how Cartoon Network's offering has extended into the digital realm as a result of this ‘total consumption' trend, and its impact on advertisers. In our latest #Newsmaker segment, Jessica Tennant pinned down Nicole Reitz-Chidrawi and Samantha Ferguson on Flint & Tinder's first year of event planning, organising and executing, as well as how their name signifies the soul of the business and their belief that there's never just one element responsible for making magic happen. read more

A time for self-regulation and radio congratulations - 24 Apr 2017

[Leigh Andrews] What a bumper marketing and media week it's been! We start things off on a cautionary note, with the news that 24.com has accepted Verashni Pillay's resignation from The Huffington Post SA with immediate effect. The news followed immediately on the release of the findings of the press ombudsman that a #fakenews blog published on The HuffPost SA was both malicious and discriminatory. We also congratulate the winners of the 2017 Liberty Radio Awards. read more

Marketing best practice for the online and offline world - 10 Apr 2017

Keeping things brand relevant, Michael Bornheim of Oracle shares why an integrated data platform is the key to aligning marketing, sales and service. This is especially true when you step out of your brand manager shoes and into your own customer persona to realise that whether you're watching an advert, engaging with a social community manager or trying to resolve a service issue, customers expect brands to know their history and preferences. Pippa Naudé rounds out Scan Display's EuroShop 2017 coverage with an overview of the top five exquisite exhibit trends according to MD Justin Hawes. read more

[Leigh Andrews] Leigh Crymble gets into the ‘Potayto, Potarto' debate by explaining how Cards Against Humanity's ‘Advertisement'-emblazoned potato Super Bowl ad changed how she sees marketing. Rethinking advertising - 23 Jan 2017

[Leigh Andrews] If you're not yet into the swing of things, we have industry-relevant thought leadership to get you on the right track. First up is Daryn Mason, an Oracle CX evangelist, who explains why machine learning might be the saviour of advertising, as it brings greater nuance to the way consumers manage content and how brands distribute it. He says the technology is turning ad blockers from all-or-nothing sorting programs into sophisticated ‘content brokers' that scrutinise adverts for relevance based on each customer's needs. Sticking to the topic of ‘learning', I chatted to two of the AAA School's lecturers Charles Maggs and Mandy Speechly, on the students' 2016 #LoeriesRankings and wins. read more
