Winter woes - 11 Jul 2007

By Bridget Farham

We are deep into winter now and snow has been seen across the country – although not in the quantities that we are used to on the Cape mountains. Winter is also the time of spreading viruses – coughs, colds and flu. What can we all do to prevent the spread of these irritating and sometimes more than simply irritating illnesses? There are no specifics against the common cold, although certain immune boosters have now shown some efficacy in clinical trials. But, the best remedy is still to wash your hands frequently, try to avoid people who are infected and, when you have a cold yourself, avoid spreading it around by working from home for a couple of days.

Influenza is a bit different. The same applies, but there is also a highly effective vaccine available, which really should be used. We have a very low rate of vaccination in this country, even among those who have the resources and the knowledge. Although this flu season has not been bad, there is no room for complacency. Flu vaccine should be a regular winter event – and it is never too late to be vaccinated. If you work for yourself you will really regret the time that it takes to recover from flu. And if you employ people, you will be well served by insisting that your workforce are vaccinated.
