Are journos being real twits to tweet?
I find the reporting styles very interensting, especially with our Political Reporters. Some just keep to the facts, and then you have the great journos with insight, such as Stephen Grootes, that can actually predict in a split second what the outcome or next comment will be. Cutting edge reporting, with a great deal of anticipation in every tweet, making you wait for the next.....and the next.............. Posted on 13 Feb 2012 17:47

Sentech loses high court battle
Nice that e-Botswana won, but the local TV offerings are dismal, so we tend to watch France24 Posted on 13 Feb 2012 17:19

Can Facebook ever make (real) money?
Thanks, Thomas. You give solid options rather than my tearing at FB (Google The Facebook Failure if interested). I find your online university idea fascinating although, if it materialized, others would be quick to follow. Posted on 13 Feb 2012 16:10

Sasha Martinengo, 5FM parting ways
I listen to 5FM all day up to 6pm, (techno hour and I'm gone)
I don't listen to 5FM for the repetitive playlist of mechanically produced "music", I listen to 5FM because the voices I hear there are intellectually superior and wittier than any other radio station.
So please bear this in mind before you employ another twelve year old barbie doll to irritate me with stories about puppy dogs, lipstick and wedding cake. Posted on 13 Feb 2012 15:22

90% of Americans eat too much salt
I didn't think I had to worry about sodium because I don't have high blood pressure, but it looks like I was wrong:

[2012 trends] In case the world doesn't end...
Lots of things to do this year and ahead apart from End-of-the-World theme parties, perhaps if the world doesn't ends it would be interesting to see John Brown on Discovery again.

[2012 trends] Influencers take to the web and run the streets
Do you have any example of a technology field which has seen a rise in the involvement of influencers? I know about a game called Empire Avenue, in which you can buy and sell your friends share's based on their social influence. Posted on 10 Feb 2012 19:41

"Marketing's common sense - anyone can do it." Well, maybe not.
Hi Rob.

Gillian Rightford and I have designed some hands-on, practical training modules for marketing teams and their agencies - part instruction and a lot of case study based practice in a workshop style setting. We customise the material per group, to ensure a mixture of proprietary brands and brands outside of the category in question, so that participants are taken outside of their comfort zone and have to really get to grips with the various tools and constructs. Thank you for your comment. I seems alot of trends you have listed above are linked with each other as they have cause and effect relationship for example trends 1-4 affect each other. I am looking forward to what happens next! Posted on 10 Feb 2012 16:22

Cell C goes to FoxP2, King James, Prima Plus, trigger/isobar
My prediction - client will gel better with one of the two ATL agencies. Competition between them will ultimately result in ATL being consolidated with one of the two agencies. Unless I'm missing something.. Anyhoo, time will tell. That's a whole lot of sharing going on! May the best man win. Posted on 10 Feb 2012 15:19

Are journos being real twits to tweet?
As the old adage goes, the conversation is happening; either you're part of it or you're not. So for media brands to ignore the power of Twitter is, I believe, short-sighted.

I agree, for instance, that tweeting can be an invaluable way of building relationships between individuals, journalists and the media they represent. The fact is that Twitter doesn't replace more traditional forms of media (including online media), but rather acts as a conduit; a way of connecting to more in-depth commentary on the back of breaking news tweets.

By way of example, although I followed commentary on the #SONA last night, I didn't leave it at that, because Twitter only provides a certain kind of information - and in a certain way. This morning I went through all of my favourite media providers to read their commentary on what the President had said.

And let's not forget how many links to media features are posted on Twitter every day. Personally, my average is between 10 and 15 - and what better way is there to use this word-of-mouth feature to drive traffic to a web site?

On a more individual level, I follow several journalists on Twitter and so enjoy some of their commentary that I consciously look out for their reports, columns, shows etc., especially the ones of those who have an edgy, personal tweeting style.

Building and enriching the reader's relationship with a media brand in this way is, after all, what it's all about in today's cluttered communications environment.

As for the revenue model, well it's perhaps too early to see clearly how Twitter itself can/will be used to generate revenue. But if it builds relationships with specific media providers and drives readers/listeners/viewers to those providers, I'd say that's a good enough reason for journos to tweet.
