You think that's bad...  by  Cheryl
A municipal officer once tried to charge us a location fee for getting a shot of Table Mountain from the city centre and he was beind dead serious. Cape Town will soon learn that the appeal of the mountian and Camps Bay soon fade when the production costs come in. Unfortunately it will only be then that they consider pricing themselves within economic norms and by then they would have ruined it for the guys trying to make a serious living. Filmmakers have already realised that KZN can give them more in terms of locations and value for money. Keep dreaming Cape Town.

Airports are all rip-offs  by  Jo
Can't comment on Cape Town proper, since Port Pretentious ranks slightly below Margate in my estimation, so I avoid it generally.
But all airports all overpriced, especially in foreign currency. In Harare airport, just before Bob really started hitting the fan, a beer cost Z$100, R10, or US$2. Translated to R3 in zims and R20 in US. Which was still nice, Addis Ababa doesn't even have a vending machine or toilet paper. Kinshasa doesn't have bathrooms.

Money makes the world go round...  by  Herman Lategan
I paid R17 for a glass -- yes a glass -- of mineral water at the Table Bay Hotel in the Waterfront. Enough said...

I was in Durban for the long W/end...  by  Ugly(D)
Beverly Hills Hotel, restaurant called "Element" I ordered a Double Jameson, the waiter did not warn, as usual, when it came to the bill... I had to pay R50 buck, that's R25 for a single, all the other drinks are normal prices, except for Whisky and Wine, nice place, but beware of the profiteers... Element Die..

Try the Radisson  by  Marc
The Radisson in the Waterfront charges R30 for a glass of wine and it's a small glass of wine.

As a born and bread Capetonian I am sadened by the greediness of businesses here.

Melrose Arch  by  Greg
My Fiance and I visited the Melrose Arch Hotel one Sunday afternoon and each ordered a GLASS of champagne. We didn't get to keep the glasses we drank from, so I was the D*&^%$ in when the bill arrived (really, we each had one glass only) and I had to fork out R280. There was no price list for a glass or a bottle of champagne, and I knew from where we were that it wouldn't be cheap. I priced the bottle at a Store on the Monday, the Melrose Arch have a 254% mark up. My mistake, and not one I'll make again.

SO SAD  by  MARKETING MAN
Isn't it so sad when a handful of greedy people out there ruin it for the rest of their industry? This applies for the ad and production industry (as can be seen by the reduced number of overseas shoots in good old Cape Town) as well as for certain restaurant districts etc. We've almost completely stopped going out to nightclubs, simply because the pretentious and unnecessarily expensive nature of the clubs here in CT. So sad..

Proudly SA  by  Ugly(D)
I think its time, all South African Citizens should have a Proudly SA card, so that those who are proudly SA can get discounts or pay discounted prices in all, Bush Lodges, restaurants, night clubs and etc...This would encourage SA to travel and enjoy SA, without thinking of prices...

The Taiwanese model  by  Tooseday
Like Ugly (D) suggested, there's a model in Taiwan where the locals are given local prices in shops, restaurants, hotels etc. and seperate prices for foreigners/visitors. Good system, well if you're Taiwanese...

NICE IDEA  by  MARKETING MAN
The cable car company here in CT has a deal whereby SA citizens get to go up the mountain for a much-reduced rate. There was talks of setting up a system similar to the previously mentioned Proudly SA one a few years ago, but CT Tourism board and Sheryl Ozinsky was quoted as saying that the system does not really work too well overseas as tourists felt like they were being ripped off. I still think it could work very nicely though.

SA Citezens are being ripped off....  by  Ugly(D)
It does not make sense for the Tourism Board to say

"CT Tourism board and Sheryl Ozinsky was quoted as saying that the system does not really work too well overseas as tourists felt like they were being ripped off."

Which tourist... Are they talking about? Tourist from the States, earning Dollars to rip off our land. The reasons the property prices has gone sky rocketed, esp. in Cape Town, is because when ur currency is 6times greater than the country you live in, then R2 Million house is nothing... Gee I would love to by some property in Mozambique... but I doubt the government would allow any foreigner to do that... Anyway it’s the fascist rule we voted for... Beware of the Profiteers...

Doesnt help though  by  Willy
Still doesnt stop the lack of interest from overseas companies when it comes to making commercials and films here. I've just heard of a feature film we lost to Europe (of all places) - because of high prices- especially in Cape Town. This is really not the reasonable destination it used to be. And lets face it, until we can get the crime (even on Table Mountain) under control, its a real cheek charging ridiculous prices.

Sandton is just as bad!
Colleagues of mine went for a drink before AdFocus on Monday night at the Michaelangelo Hotel on Sandton Square and ended up paying R130 for 2 small ordinary glass of wine (not even a good estate - good ol' crappy house wine). Disgusting when South Africans can't even afford to go out in their own country without checking prices for rip-offs. Talk about exclusive and trying to keep ordinary folks out!

That just won't work  by  Johan
Although it may seem like a good idea - the reality is that you cannot do this as regardless of how much you are spending, noone likes to be taken for a ride. How would you feel should you travel to London and find out that the guy next to youin a show paid half the price you paid just becuase he lives in London.

Ideas can be great on paper - but not work in reality. Talk to the guys who thought up Communism... nice idea, but not really.
