Is race still relevant in ads?
Why don't we keep on keeping on about the race issue? Its articles like this that stir up problems. Leave it be - probably most people won't notice - and the answer to your question I believe is yes, white consumers do listen to white presenters and black to black. Its a fact of life Posted on 19 Jun 2013 16:13

Shock! Horror! Now we know what it's like to lose Face...
Has your fb profile been cloned yet?

I directed the ancyl, Nkandla and Lindiwe Mazibuko co.za domains in the past to other sites, right by some people, wrong by others.

And re: spying

1. There just isn't the personnel available to monitor all the people in South Africa who are speaking poorly about the government.

2. I haven't seen your neighbour, but after reading your piece I must admit if you want to send me her picture I probably won't say no.

3. What of Julian Assange? Is he right or wrong? Posted on 19 Jun 2013 15:57

My answer would be yes.

And it will be relevant as long it is relevant in political parties and South Africa in general as a whole.

Sad, but true. Posted on 19 Jun 2013 15:37

I agree. It happens a lot in corporate communications too and can really pose a challenge to getting a tight message across in a really cluttered communication landscape. Posted on 19 Jun 2013 14:54

100% agree with you on this one. As for the adverts frequency, all it did was make me irritated and essentially started turning me against the company running the advert. Then when they changed the presenter - my first through what "what the hell are they thinking??!! Maybe advertisers should consider that when it comes to frequency of adverts - maybe sometimes less is actually more... Posted on 19 Jun 2013 13:53

Sometimes because of our different cultures (often tied to race) in this very diverse country of ours - it makes sense to use talent and faces that are relatable to the target audience you are looking to speak to. There is nothing wrong with that. I certainly don't think it discredits the country's efforts at social cohesion. Posted on 19 Jun 2013 13:44

Regional radio stations should go back to basics
Some valid points have been raised frame either side of the fence.the facts are that most Sabc ALS stations are in fact national broadcasters . This means that they should reflect national content. Posted on 19 Jun 2013 03:34

So true. It's exactly the same thing as people who build a database and never do anything with it. Posted on 18 Jun 2013 16:44

Culture via language
A language issue, especially in South Africa, is a very contentious as well as emotive and sensitive one because of the recent past we come from. I personally fully agree with Sanele that it should not be difficult to come to an agreement as to what the provincial official languages should be. A province like the North West, for instances, can easily decide to have as its official languages Afrikaans, English and Setswana. This is informed by practical and rational realities found in the province such as the inhabitants of the province (large numbers of Afrikaans people are found in areas such as Litchenburg, Coligny, Zeerust, Potchefstroom etc.). There can be no question about Batswana being the predominant inhabitants in the province. Also supporting the practical realities is the abundant Afrikaans literature that already exist that we can opportunistically use to further the Setswana language. Practically Setswana needs both English and Afrikaans to develop but the speakers of Setswana should not only love and respect the language but also be commited to developing the language if it is to move an inch in so far as development is concerned. The move taken by UKZN is not only a positive one but a pioneering one as other provincially based universities should follow suit sooner rather than later. As for critics, why is it necessary for Stellenbotch University to have Afrikaans as its medium of instruction when it so wrong for UKZN to have Zulu as compulsory for all first years. For God sake, it is only compulsory in the first year; it is not even a medium of instruction as Afrikaans is at Stellenbotch University. For me language is a tool of communication and if practical realities on the ground dictate that a particular language be spoken/taught/used as medium of instruction/taught as compulsory language, so be it. Let us put petty political views aside and begin to be practical!!!! Posted on 18 Jun 2013 15:45
