SME Survey 2012: SMEs slow to harness Cloud
Any correlation between the rate of adoption and the reliability of broadband connection? There are vast areas of South Africa where cloud services are not an option until the networks perform better. Posted on 25 May 2012 15:26

E-mail to be ditched in favour of social media?
Dropping email would be exceptionally silly, the problem is most companies do not know how to use their email databases correctly. Posted on 24 May 2012 22:23

Beating online fraud
I shop online a lot, and post online payments most of the time. The most annoying thing any company can do is to send you an email to confirm your order or account. The best thing a company can do is to simply ask me to telesign — No friction, easy, painless online purchase! Posted on 24 May 2012 19:57

MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards 2012 - announcement of the winners
I believe the awards play a pivotal role in restoring some pride and drive in the community media and small media sector- an Industry hardly recognised in South Africa.

The MDDA and Sanlam did a very good job pulling the event together- and I believe they should be commended for a job well done.

To maybe comment of what @Pathatic say- I wouldn’t say the event was a complete disaster because your wife was not notified. However, I think the organisers could have done a better job and ensured that the finalists were at the gala. Which Community Media is your wife from? Posted on 24 May 2012 17:00

Zuma and the right to dignity
@ Gerdus Senekal you are obvoiusly dont know our South African Constitution, Do you know Sarah Bartman? and she was painted against her will because she had big ass, and some saw it as abnormal, but it was against her Human Right. My point is whatever Marray was trying to get from this, It has unhumanly shamed the public that a person can degrade a sinior citizen, a president, a father, a husband in manner. he got the attantion he wanted i take it. Now if this person is killed i hope u c it as a bullet which wanted to hit a spot. Posted on 24 May 2012 14:11

E-mail to be ditched in favour of social media?
I do not think emails should be dumped. Social media just needs to be integrated more into CEO's life. Most have found Twitter to be a manageable network. Limited characters and direct to your audience. Posted on 24 May 2012 11:27

MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards 2012 - announcement of the winners
I happen to be married to one of these 'winners' - yet what I fail to understand is that the 'winner' was never notified that the awards were taking place, that she was a finalist or that she had won. She was also not even invited to attend the awards ceremony and actually learnt of her 'award' via facebook today, five days after the event took place! Why would any event organiser seek publicity for an event that was obviously a disaster from the start? Posted on 23 May 2012 19:09

Ng'ang'a Ndung'u....a key development worth emulation in rest of Africa and Kenya especially. Big and 'small' Media houses must take up the challenge and must also involve the' alternative Media' in Kenya often looked upon with scorn and cynicism. take Posted on 23 May 2012 17:43

Content marketing: what it is, and why you should be doing it
Hello everyone. We've been producing "branded content", or "content marketing", as it has been described in this piece, since 2005. Nice to see that brands are catching on that building engagement with an audience is not the same as spamming them with a sales pitch.

MultiChoice: Feedback on Dish Magazine poll
The only reason why MultiChoice wanted to make the magazine slimmer was to save costs on printing, paper, admin, etc... What really annoys me is the fact that the consumer was not given the choice to vote right from the beginning. Typical corporate company, run by management in Ivory towers with huge salaries and bonuses with accountants looking to cut corners where possible. We're not stupid MultiChoice, we know exactly what you were really trying to achieve. I hope management reads this, as you are pathetic. Posted on 23 May 2012 16:09

For the ordinary person in the street, yes, his or her dignity should be protected and respected whenever he or she is going about life peacefully and with dignity, doing no harm.

For a person who has chosen a highly public role, however - a role which carries with it enormous responsibilities and accountability towards the entire nation - the situation is vastly different. It is inherent in life itself and it is a universal truth that there are strong winds which blow at the top. Any individual in high public office must fully expect and be able to cope with intense public scrutiny. Heat and criticism go with this kind of territory. Every country needs strong and healthy leaders. No self-respecting nation can afford to house 'victims' in powerful and critical public positions. Posted on 23 May 2012 15:17

Should B2B companies be thinking about a social media strategy?
That this is "contentious" topic is surprising. Maybe because of the idea that social media is a channel, which is very shallow thinking. Business should think of marketing and business as occurring in a social era. It is an era not a channel. So should you connect with people and engage in the community in the way they connect and communicate ... Clearly. Posted on 23 May 2012 13:56

General Motors drops Facebook advertising on eave of IPO: Why?
I totally agree - the blind reapplication of broadcast terms and measures to digital (and other) media has created the rush on "likes" for it's own sake. What's really key for me is always Strategy first: what do I want to say? Who do I want to say it to? And then, where and when and how can I say it so that it is most likely to be really heard and engaged with?

I think many of the issues behind poor ROI on digital media can be attributed to not understanding the reasons for using them, as well as not understanding how to use them effectively (eg. FB paid ads vs content strategy) - as you explain so well, Walter. Thanks for a great article. Posted on 23 May 2012 11:29
