In a democracy with a free press a journalist should be able to express his opinion without having to incure the wrath of the state or those intollerant to his point of view.
The fact that over a hundred people died over a newspaper article is testimony to a religion and idiology that has become a distructive force like so many other religions in the world.
Having freedom implicitly means you have the opportunity to make choices, both good and bad. That this journalist should have been physically curtailed is possibly questionable, but that he/she should have shown more wisdom is undoubted. One only hopes that if a newspaper like This Day gives leeway to irresponsible journalism, then the general public in South Africa will have enough common sense to recognise this weakness and effectively shut the operation down by simply not buying the papers.
