Townships not over shopped, wealthier Gauteng suburbs are
My immediate thoughts on the comments are - the need for equitable access, understanding the market size/character needed to ensure viability and retail mix. Shopping centres are key to the future development of disadvantaged areas (eg townships, rural areas). Using disposable income as the measure will ensure that impoverished communities will have less access or have to travel longer distances to get access to them. On the other hand, we need to ensure that shopping centres will have a long term viability. Therefore, the need to look at their optimum location taking all factors into consideration. In the development of shopping centres in disadvantaged communities, one has to look at the retail mix. Maybe Maponya Mall did not get the mix exactly right. What I do know is that there are developers out there that are getting this mix right and the shopping centres they are building in townships and rural areas are quite successfu. The bottom line is that shopping centres can be an important catalyst for economic development in impoverished areas so when developing them we need to ensure that they are located in the best positions, will have long term viability and provide a mix of retail that the people of that area want. Will the Budget introduce sin tax to fund NHI?
Sin tax is not enough. They want to start taxing Dividends as well, so much for dividends... Posted on 15 Feb 2012 20:59

The accessibility analysis can also be done by disposable income. AfricaScope also has disposable income that can be used in the analysis. The key question would be - what extent of disposable income is required to ensure viability of a major shopping centre. Posted on 15 Feb 2012 20:55

NewsNow launches free digital edition
I picked up a copy of NewsNow recently, just to check it out, and must say I was disappointed.

It's not that the concept of bite-sized chunks of news brought to the busy consumer on a weekly basis doesn't work for me in principle, but who needs one piece after another that simply quotes sentences from other news sources - and acknowledges each one within the space of 250 words? It's distracting, and the reader is left with the feeling of that they're not really any the wiser for having read the piece.

I also found the writing remarkably mediocre although, like parent magazine YOU, the infographics are good.

Still, if you're going to claim that SA's cities aren't amongst the crime capitals of the world, it's a good idea to at least say which stats are being used to make this determination - total crime (including bag snatchings, for instance)? Well, yeah, that's going to influence the analysis. Violent crime stats would give an entirely different picture. After all, SA is the only country in the world with a murder rate higher than its road accident death rate (at approximately 29/100,000 of the population).

So, in short, this is a news magazine I don't rate ( I especially don't rate a magazine that seems to be spinning crime stats!), but then again, I'm probably not the target market. Posted on 15 Feb 2012 16:24

Despite uneasy co-existence, state and media are co-dependent
I'm with him on this >>"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter," says Amadou Mahtar Ba, Africa Media Initiative (AMI) CEO. Posted on 15 Feb 2012 16:08

Design Indaba appoints Adams & Adams, introduces creative films, encourages youth
LOVE Design Indaba - and what a great idea to include a workshop on protecting intellectual property. It's something that's much needed and long overdue. Posted on 15 Feb 2012 16:05

I tend to share the same view with Michele here. I consider Maponya Mall and the retailers and outlets that have closed since it opened. Also to consider is supply and demand, hence the closure of Exclusive Books. Consumer insight rears its head in this case. Posted on 15 Feb 2012 15:46

I'd be interested to see this same analysis looking at density by disposable income.

Strip out population density and overlay population profitability. A large number of people does not mean a large amount of money to spend.

Or have I missed the point? Posted on 15 Feb 2012 15:16

Are journos being real twits to tweet?
I find the reporting styles very interensting, especially with our Political Reporters. Some just keep to the facts, and then you have the great journos with insight, such as Stephen Grootes, that can actually predict in a split second what the outcome or next comment will be. Cutting edge reporting, with a great deal of anticipation in every tweet, making you wait for the next.....and the next.............. Posted on 13 Feb 2012 17:47

Can Facebook ever make (real) money?
Thanks, Thomas. You give solid options rather than my tearing at FB (Google The Facebook Failure if interested). I find your online university idea fascinating although, if it materialized, others would be quick to follow. Posted on 13 Feb 2012 16:10
