Woolworths are the worst offenderes when it comes to excessive packaging and the impact that has on our environment. I am astounded that they should receive such a prestigious award.
Woolworths should be held accountable for the unbelieveable rubbish they generate and the prices the charge. I have moved elsewhere for better value and a better environmemtal attitude. I wish more people would get it and move or pressurise them to adopt the right stance.
A while ago I used to work as a promoter and was commissioned to work at Woolworths in Bryanston shopping centre, I was there for 5 days, no one can pretend for that long. They take so much care in all they do, customer service, cleanliness - even in the back area. they might be offering us quick, easy food in disposable containers - but everything is recycable so right back atcha! Woolies deserves the award, they are a proudly SA company and we should all be basking in their sucess. coz it's our sucess as a country.

The tin foil container on a polystryrafoam pallet inside a cardboard sleave with a clear plastic outer. What is recyclable other that the cardboard sleave?
You obviously believe their bullshit as a result of 5 glorious days of brainwashing.
Besides the question of what is actually recycable, where in South Africa do we see progressive and efficient recycling happening. Looking at the above comments I am actually getting worried whether Berthold Brecht was right when he said "A hungry man has no conscience". The award was not about about look who makes the yummiest sandwiches, but responsbile retail practices. Thank God WW has an innovative grocery supply system so your favourite munchies wont be affected by global warming.
If they were really serious about addressing the issue of sustainable growth in the context of the changing social and environmental needs of South Africa, then they should not be buying cheap clothing from China.

sounds like a dodgy retail-backslapping award..
