You definitely don't need a degree to be a journalist by Joller
If you have a good portfolio and you can prove your passion and talent, you shouldn't have a hard time landing a position at a publishing house. (Or at the very least, an interview.)You will boost your chances significantly if you can demonstrate a good understanding of the magazine you'd like to work on, by presenting a few ideas for features, etc., along with your CV. (Even better, try writing a sample feature or opinion piece for the publication in question.)And don't let anyone tell you that you need a degree to pursue a career in journalism. I can assure you that there is a serious need for new entrants to the profession, because the industry is growing at such a pace. So don't despair. If you have what it takes to make it in the tough world of magazine journalism, you will!
Where there is a will, there's a way. Your determination to achieve your ambition, more than anything else, will land you that desired position. Push, push amd push some more. Otherwise Joller said it all.
From someone who has been in the business longer than she would care to admit, my advice would be DO YOUR RESEARCH on the magazine(s)you want to work for. They are very niche these days, even though they may not appear to be.
And if you can't get in as a writer, be prepared to do something else for a publishing company. A toe in the door often becomes a permanent position because your employers have got to know you. Have seen this happen frequently.
Thanks guys! I'm not giving up. I'm really tired working on multiple features at once, but hey it's all well worth it. I've taken your advice to heart and I'll be sure to let you know just how it turns out (I'm inspired! - watch this forum!
