Payment?  by  Nicole
Very often, there is very little or no pay. Exploitation, you cry? The experience you gain is worth more than any money (although a lunch allowance is nice!)
Approach your internship as a learning experience only, but work as though it were a salaried position. That way you'll make an excellent impression and get the most out of what is meant to be an excellent opportunity to gain real experience.

you expect money?  by  Realist
How can you expect to be paid for internship????

Exploitation? You are being offered a superb opportunity for free experience, without having to pay for the mistakes you will make in the process of learnign at the company's expense. Be realistic for goodness sake!

Try to get a job without experience and then come back and discuss the value of unpaid internship...

Salary is indeed justifiable for PR intern  by  Hunk
Whether you like it or otherwise, PR students doing internships are being paid throughout the country. Therefore, people should stop poking fun at poor Phumi's realistic and valid question. The poor girl is just painting a clear picture of reality in terms of interns being generally exploited. She also seems to be aware that PR interns are being paid, hence she asked how much. I would thus like to advise people who are clueless in terms of issues surrounding PR internship, to keep their misconstrued comments to themselves. By the way, to answer the poor girl's question, PR interns earn R2000 UPWARDS.

two thousand?  by  Piet
R2000 upwards?

You are dreaming. An intern would be very lucky to earn that much. Interns should be greatful to get into an intern position with no pay, and should be very happy if they get acontribution towards transport.

Be realistic, it takes a lot of manpower to watch over an intern. Interns are done a favour by being allowed into a company, they better appreciate it.

Intern phobia sucks  by  Thabo Bapela
People like you who don’t have anything constructive to say have to keep their bitter remarks to themselves without having to publicly embarrassing themselves. Companies are not doing interns any favours by taking them in to give them real work experience.
In actual fact it is the companies who are set to gain, seeing that they will be able to spot and have a closer look at a new and promising talent at their disposal that needs to be nurtured to fulfill its true potential
And people who have an intern phobia like you must stop feeling threatened by interns, they are not there to seize you job but to be mentored by you who have extensive experience, from which they can launch their own careers.
I concur with all folks who say interns are in general paid R 2000. 00, without doubt interns never go for internship exclusively to gain work experience only. They see internships as wonderful opportunity to advertise themselves to prospective employers. They are beyond doubt enthusiastic to discover as much as they can to advance their personal likelihood, of being offered permanent employment at the end of their internship contract.
To them internship represents a perfect way of placing one’s foot on the doorstep of their chosen careers.

Here's some real life experience advice  by  Graduate
I did my internship last year and hope I can help. As an intern I was paid, not much, but as mentioned below it was enough to cover at least transport and lunch. (R1 500.00) This is however not the case for all interns as some do not get paid and other are paid more, they are however only a handful. As for the word, yes you might feel that there are days that you are being exploited but as I learnt through the year it is those little extra things you are asked to do that teaches you time management, patience and in the end grows your charachter. But do not fool yourself, should it happen that you land in a terrible situated (which happens but is not the norm) speak up! Good Luck with the internship, I hope it goes well.

It depends gal!  by  Julls
It depends on where you are doing your internship and it is rather disgusting for people to say you are being done a favour with companies risking their names for you.If interns can be paid in Umtata then believe me you there is and should be a payment but don't look at it like a payment but rather as a way of making sure u are at work the next day.BE WARNED dear that u will find yourself doing what u never thought u would do, things like coffee, sweeping etc.The staff will exploit u dear and u will need to look ahead.

PR Intern Salary
Hi. As a PR intern myself; the positions advertised at my University on behalf of companies included a monthly salary. I cannot remember seeing one who did not offer payment. According to the posts advertised, interns earned between R1500.00 to R3000.00 per month. For both company and Intern it is a win-win situation. The company pays a minimal salary for an extra pair of hands round their PR department while the Intern gains invaluable work experience. Yes, Interns DO get paid. For all of you who laughed at this suggestion, wake up and smell the money. The Intern world is changing, R1 at a time. Whether you like it or not ;)
