Would this have been more creative if engineered in post?
And you could have made changes to the character. et al?

I wonder if it was 'shot' to be original, even though I assume it's not.
"Given that no-one was injured". Nice. How expectations have lowered for
shoots. LOL

kudo's to Putty for the color correction tho, it's lovely.Posted on 18 Jun 2007 19:12

How does the TJDR handle client briefs?
Do they actually think at all or just go onto You Tube?Posted on 20 Jun 2007 11:31
Youtube as an idea
I think youtube is their concept. *shrug* Maybe not the most original of ideas but its certainly something people can associate with. And its a better angle than that vodacom meerkat. I see that vodacom is now attempting a more life-style approach to their ads. Has MTN got them scared?Posted on 20 Jun 2007 11:40
that's called deflection sister.
pointing a finger at another ad (Vodacom) to deflect from the sheer lameless of their own ad, MUST be hurtin.Posted on 20 Jun 2007 20:39
and the article says " "
"which was simply to demonstrate how incredible and imaginative people can be."
Hugely imaginative !!!!Posted on 20 Jun 2007 11:45
I'M A GOLDEN GOD OF POWER!
and i love cheesePosted on 20 Jun 2007 20:37
EVERY TIME YOU STEAL IDEAS OFF YOUTUBE YOU MAKE BABY JESUS CRY
Sure non-advertising,, non-Youtubing, non-MTV watching people (who constitute 99% of the South African population) think these ads are original and great. But the bigger point here is that the creatives (for lack of a better word) responsible should be hiding their faces in shame.

I'm lookin' at YOU, Metropolitan Republic.Posted on 20 Jun 2007 15:46

Over-reactions
This is a very nice advertisement, it's great from the conceiptualised angle, and deepened design. Can you have had tough undertaking and such execution? It's floorless...Posted on 20 Jun 2007 20:58

Agreed!
A brilliant ad, and so what if it's been done before - those that doth protest too much should look in the mirror - for me the sheer scale of the project warrants applause. Great job!Posted on 21 Jun 2007 15:26

All the ads are ripoffs
"Go fall in love" was a concept originally developed and shot by Hirt&Carter in Dbn a few years ago.

The two oaks singing hadaway's "What is love?" - search for Chinese Backstreet Boys and discover a rip-off of a three-year old concept. Right down to the guy playing on the computer in the background

The go be a rockstar is basically OK Go's music video which the ad agency / mtn went ahead and bought. Its been around for a year or so as well.

Which leaves Go Start Something aka the clap thing. In 1982 little girls were doing this in school all the time because it was a no-hit wonder fantastique that made an extremely similar music video when the covered this 1965 song.

So, where does that leave TJDR? Innocent by all accounts. Overheard in a pub I frequent was an individual from this place bemoaning that after their hard work to score the contract, MetRep numero uno and co-appointee Paul Walker strolled on in and took over with these concepts and refused to consider opinions from partners TJDR - who only do the print stuff.

And then, where does that leave MTN? IMNSHO, they should be hauling some people over the coals. Brilliant ads, given. Plaigarism - no doubt!

FTR: The chinese backstreet boys are working as advertising spokespeople and will no doubt have legal recourse, unless they were paid.Posted on 21 Jun 2007 20:59

oh??
please forward me the clap clap video, or at least reference as to where to find it. our two reference teams managed to find very little on the subject.would be a first for them to miss something as obvious as the original!Posted on 23 Jun 2007 18:47

broad uncited statements like yours are more destructive to the growth of advertising than feeding off global trends. if you dont understand the process of idea making and brand building, i would highly recommend another career path.Posted on 3 Jul 2007 20:41

SAD BUT TRUE. The SA marketing does not quite unstand MTNs latest work,
this is one of the best and cleverest marketing campaigns in SA history,

getting into bed with the public is very clever for a moblie company.

the SA marketing world needs to mature rapidly.

Stop placing weak commentary on something you know very little about.

SOME STATS.

BBH LONDON/ NOW USES ACTUAL CONTENT DIRECTLY OFF THE WEB FOR 3 OF ITS LARGEST CLIENTS.

THE PUBLIC NOW WRITE THE ADS AND THE AGENCY POSTS IT ON TV.

COKE US
NIKE GLOBAL
PROCTOR AND GAMBLE ARE NOW THE LARGEST USERS OF PUBLIC CONTENT IN THIER MARKETING COMS. ESTIMATED USE ACCORDING TO TO AD/AGE USA A HUGE 28 PERCENT

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS TO YOU IS. KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE GLOBAL ARENA BEFORE YOU COMMENT. IVANPosted on 25 Jun 2007 13:48

Dry your eyes
Boring boring discussions. Nice ripped off ads. Whatever. The point most of the creative people in this forum are trying to make against it, is that where is the creditation to the artists that created the work? The ad agency themselves are receiving creditation for work that rightfully wasn't conceived by them. As much as using public work in advertising is the next big bang, it needs to be done in a moral way. If a doctor takes creditation for a medical discovery from another doctor, it would be considered unacceptable. Why is it different for advertising.....because we don't take ourselves, or others don't take us seriously??? Business is business. And stealing is stealing. Until Metropolitan acknowledge use of other people's work in their ads (on the ads), it is still stealing. Artists stealing from artists. Lovely.Posted on 25 Jun 2007 17:42
one sensible comment at last
Thank you for putting the somewhat one-sided debate into perspective in this forum.

Point being; the message may have been borrowed, but tip your hat at the author, is the strong sentiment.

Well said.

Last years Loerie's Grand Prix?
All were verbatim replicas from U Tube, and all fooled the SA judges. As did Honda Cog (a copy of an art instillation) which fooled the world.

If we are going to judge the sources of inspiration, where do we start and where do we stop. Advertising relies on stimuli, and modern resources at that.Posted on 2 Jul 2007 21:33

Thieves, Pimps and Prostitutes
Grow up you whinging ad people. These are some of the most pathetic, self-rightous comments I've seen in a while. Take a look at yourselves for a change, zoom in on what YOU do. Don't pretend to care about a couple of kids who made a video and posted it on the net, only to have it used commercially by someone else. You don't really give a sh1t about them. If you work in advertising and have half a brain, you know damn well that ultimately your job is, on behalf of your client, to deceive the public for commercial gain. And you seem to do it with consistent regularity and pretty well. Millions of people owe banks billions because of YOUR efforts (whilst making you and your clients a handsome purse) only, on most occasions, to be let down by what you helped sell them. Not only do you accept money to do this, but you strive to win awards for it too. Excuse me while I go throw up... Collectively remove your heads from your arses, jump off your pedestals and go wash that blood of your own hands before you try removing the splinter from someone elses eye. Lets hear you all justify advertising per se. Ditto to the agency in question.Posted on 26 Jun 2007 14:23
HEY ALL YOU AD PEOPLE.....
