I wholly disagree that rewarding staff before they can prove themselves is essential in progressing your business.
Yes,I`m an old guard conservative person and I still do things in accordance with that old culture since there is nothing more constructive that can replace the robust culture I grew -up in and for me its that your business hinges on both the staff and the customer.
The duty of the staff is to sell the business to the public so that there can be money to then reward your staff. Now,for me rewarding staff it means being able to have occasional parties with me the manager and talk about the business something which is not happening today.
Yes,I agree with Chris that your eyes and ears is the production supervisor who knows everything about the staff and who must inform you as to their welbeing and performance.Yours must be to "meet and greet",and look the staff in the eye suggesting that you have something important to tell them to draw their attention since an office party is a working party and not a celebratory one.
You can start by asking if anyone has a point to raise as regards production or admin or general problems and be casual all the time to remove any awe or fear so that there can be free speech.
You must be contracted to personnel companies who must occasionally come around to oil your admin staff and you must occasionally pick-up the phone and pretend to be an outsider to see how prospective customers are communicated to.
