I am one of the lucky ones to still be employed over 40. But I am realistic enough that this will be my last job in advertising, despite years of great experience, both locally and abroad, plus the ability to still create great ads that win hearts, minds and awards.
Why won't I get another job - because I know what I am doing, unlike a lot of the people now running the asylums. They don't like that fact and they can't keep me down.
The solution - if you are good enough, well then you start your own thing and laugh at the way the industry keeps running the club for themselves. Good luck and good hunting.
As a student, I asked my very talented design lecturer why she became a lecturer? She said because noone would employ her due to age. She explained the reasons but I thought she was on of the most talented designers I know especially in typography.
Anyway, I think the best bet is to change you title. Instead of applying for design jobs, opt for managerial positions in design or even creative/art director positions.
I came into the design industry at 30 yrs old. hardest thing was taken the salary cut which is normal. but re your issue some companies will employ older people due to "stability" ito having a family, having to pay a morgage etc as opposed to a young hotshot quick to leave the company for more money elsewhere.
if you are talented and just as important, hard working, you should be able to get a job good luck
Why do people not want to hire people that are older? It never made any sense to me. People above 60 are still energetic enough and perfectly capable!Especially for a design job . Its not as though it involves hard labor. I really do not think it is fair at all. They have so much experience to offer. Most people at 60 are very bored in retirement and really still want to work and really still can work perfectly. We will all get old . Wonder how the people that do not hire old people will feel themselves when they do not get hired because they are old?Are these just men wanting to hire young chicks or are they also women only wanting to hire young people?
