When Phat Joe came to Y, he was fresh from the US & most of the content & features on his shows was from American radio, like Yo Momma's Jokes & Mock Singing so him also was no Mr Original...to a certain extend Khabzela inspired & continues to inspire people like Sbu, after all they are all from eKasie & had to hustle to be where they are. They have the common course of uplifting the youth from the lokshin and to make the rurals rule...Sbu is the best person after Khaba to keep the flame of Kasie burning & Kasie is glad to have him back,it is high time some order is restored in that Model C schoolyard called Yfm...Y is back...well at least between 6am & 9am.
Strange enough, I'm answering my own question about the changes Sbu is gonna bring to Y.For the past two shows I can already see the strategy Sbu is applying to bring back the listeners. 1) The music he has played so far reminds us of the good old days, which makes us think that the old Yfm is back. 2)Talking a lot about Khabzela and raising funds for his tombstone, it reminds us of what Y used to stand for and it tells us that thats the direction they are taking going forward. 3)The language he is using, its a township lingo that makes us as black youth feel comfortable when we communicate with him. 4)No one has ever bothered to talk about the old Yfm DJ's who have left the station since 2006 but he is doing it, all in all he is rejuvenation the Y brand.
I was moved by his interview on sunday on Bridget's show when he said Yfm is represented nationally with Bad Boy T,Unathi,Adil & Amon all on Metro, Frash at 5fm,Phat Joe at Kaya,Msizi at iGagasifm in Durbs to mention but a few. He said they all have the YDNA meaning they are still pushing what Y started 11 years ago.The only thing left for Y to do is to get rid of Chilli M!
I also agree that the pervet of the airwaves called Chilli M must be released for greener pastures.....I have no issues with any Y presenter infact am loving the new shows especially the one of Mpho Mabooi but Chilli is too much.
I just waiting to see if DJ Sbu will be able to attract large number of listeners like Chilli M is doing in the afternoon.I am in advertising and when we want target the young market today we structure the advert around Chilli M's show. For your information Chilli M is presenting the most succesful afternoon show on radio today, check the RAMS.Chilli M knows that his style of presenting he is using works for him and YFM and if that was not the case he was going to go back to the style he was using when he was at Metro FM
Shobza u r on point, i think after the comment ya Kanthan about the people who grew up with Y being stuck in the past & no longer Y material, most of us, including Sbu, were pissed off & felt that our Yfm is being destroyed in the name of modernity, that was a wrong move by Kanthan.
Sbu realized that & what did he do on his first day? exactly what u've just stated. he also went on to proof that the over 24's are still needed on Y, the ones who actually have the buying power, by raising funds for the tombstone, i bet the school-kids of Mr Pillay have 'better' things 2 do with a thousand bucks than contributing to a tombstone of someone they can't even remember or for any other good course. (unless it is one of those never-ending Y parties)
I was touched by Greg Maloka's emotions when he said he is glad that their (ex Yfm staff) legacy will be restored.
So big ups to Sbu for bringing the good ol Yfm back, YizoYizo FM as we used to call it.
I think his idea is the foundation of what the listeners of y grew to love. Sometimes it doesn't take new ideas to create a great show. If ekasi is what listeners want to hear, then I for that because I love ekasi and the work that Sbuda is doing. It won't please everyone and people may moan that he is not bringing new ideas. His formula works and his appetite for success makes it even better.
Big-ups to ekasi, I identify with that. DJ Sbu has rocked the airwaves and he will continue doing just that.
Shame !!.................Rayza in Advertising. by Rayray
I heard of his return and tuned in today 07-May to actually try and put myself onto that Y level again and guess what ? DJ Sibusiso went on to diss Phat Joe and other DJ's who left for not only lucrative contracts but DJ's who actually grew with their audiance. Yes we started with Y but people must understand that we do grow up. Yes I listen to Kwaito and House at times, but heaven help me if I am to listen to such in the morning or on my way to sign a multi-million rand contract. Yes I listen to Brook Benton,O'Jays,Manhattans and Smokey Robinson that does not mean I no longer listen to Y. I have my moments. Hell, that is called maturity. Phat Joe is the best Hip Hop Dj I know thus far and guess what ? He has grown with his audience. Advertisers and Sponsors are more likely to move his direction as his Audience has spending power. Who in their right mind will sponsor a kiddies mickey mouse show hosted by a grandfather. Y FM if you trully want to make it stick to your niche. You will then attract nappy rash advertisers and Bibo softdrinks. Get young funky DJ's who can still carry out your Y mission, vision and goals. Not some almost going to retire, one eyed mzekeze grandpa.
I do agree with u Rayray, but only when u talk about growing up.Its not gonna help Sbu to diss someone who is doing well like Phat joe @ Kaya.Phat Joe has grown, he reminds of Bob Mabena who also knew when to make his move.Yes he does play Manhattans if Y thinks young people(who have the buying power)don't like that kinda music then they are out of touch with reality. They need to bring back the shows like Msizi Shembe and Bondo's, I can still remember when I was so hooked to Msizi's late night smooth sounds and Bondo took over and never disappointed he even gave Eddie Zondi a tough competition when he was still doing the sunday afternoon show.If Y is serious about bringing their listeners back they need to grow with them and start informing them like Kaya does but in their own Y style, then we'll talk.
Rayray if only you can cool down the temper & try to tackle the ball not the player aka Sbu...but in any case you are raising some interesting points as highlighted by Shobza.
I think the key for Y right now is finding that balance on how to keep 'funky & energetic' for the high-school & varsity crowd as well as to be informing, mature & of interest to the graduates & young adults in the job market (those who have the buying power). One can argue that a kid can't guide or advice another kid, so ultimately Y needs mature jocks like Sbu to motivate, guide & encourage the kids, after all that's what Khabzela did for most of us, the PYG's. You can't have a 20year old loud-mouth trying to convince another 20year old that alcohol is bad.
I've listened in specifically for adverts this morning and i 've noticed that the only prominent ad is that of Wild Bean, which obviously targets the 'working class like the Jon Qwelane feature. For the Khabzela campaign almost all contributors are people who grew up with Y, and yes Yfm do need them for this & future campaigns, meaning they'll try by all means to keep this crowd on the Y-camp, even if returning the Msizi & Phindi-G kinda shows.
For now this whole balancing is on Sbu's shoulders, and methinks he's on the right track thus far...i believe the youth in lokshin needs him more that the Model-C type youth in Sandton needs Bridget.
quite interesting to learn that chilli m is ranked highly by the ad industry, he comes across as a bit too loud and uninformative for me hence i prefer either metro or 5fm around that timeslot.
as for Y, they made a huge-ass gamble by this new repositioning and i doubt it'll pay-off cause rumour has it they recorded the lowest listenership for beginning of april amongst all the commercial radio stations that revamped.we'll have to look at the next set of ARs to see whether this whole exercise payed off.
as for the advertising on the station, ive noticed that real ads are declining, havent heard quality ads in a while
The show sucks period. the man himself deserves praise but his show sucks. trying to be cool, crazy and informative at the same time!! No Can Do Sbudda!! He can't expect old Y-FM listeners to remain the same when he himself has changed so much. A joke that was funny in 1998 isn't funny in 2008. so pls stop indaba yokugwara. I didn't listen to Khaba- so I don't understand the crayzz. but i just hope his show was relevant and wasn't anything like Sbu's.
Chilli's style of presenting is classic pure classic!!! The guy has matured buy still cool enough to maintain Generation Y. he might not make much sense at times but maybe that's what sets him apart. who wants to listen to hard hitting facts after a good beating from work (show of hands please)Ooh I thought as much!!
let mi break it down for you people. having watchd sbu thread from y to foreign land called ukhozi, growing the stations lsm ratings and younger audience standings, the man is relatively good . truth be told, he loves radio but his delivery is more than flawed. reasons for him to gain such listenerz wherever he goes is due to his social influence. his show at y right nw has nothing to go huha about, its exactly a replica of his ukhozi show. he is not innovative and doesnt thnk off his head and lacks witt. his strong point is his sarcastic humour, whch of coz aint sumthng we aint used to. on the strng side, he has matured as a jock. on his shw he tackles intelligent topics of whch he engages youth in and thats wat we av been yearning for. he is unrestrictd and uses that to his advantage. has an entourage of people that make the hardcore y people nostalgic of his ylens day. his producer deliverz well on the side of content. lastly, the man has set it out clearly on air that he is on a war to kill all the so called breakfast shows that are in direct competition with him. phat joe? he is fatigued. thomas? too laid back as though he is nt doin a breakfast shw. gareth? different market all together. so my bet? sbu is gonna get another mzantsi award. why? people are listening to hm in numberz whether he has got talent or nt. you wnt blv hw many of my colleagues tel mi about the turn of events on hs show. any jock strives to get that out of their audience- the talk-about-me factor. sbu, kill them son

Well said Ntando but I don't agree with u when it comes to Phat Joe.I think he is a perfect example of someone who has grown, he understands his audience he knows that Dada Man would never work on Kaya fm that's why he is doing so well.Even Sbu knows that, that's why him and his entourage are alwayz on his case. They know that he is the only real competition in morning radio.
Shobza...I've followed your comments whenever the name Phat Joe is mentioned and one could start believing that you are in fact...Phat Joe. You shoot down any criticism of the man, regardless of whether it's constructive or otherwise. Tell me one creative thing or feature that Phat Joe has brought into his show & I will tell you where Bin Laden is hiding, if it wasn't for Jeff, Thando & Stevie who knows the Kaya market his show could've been disastrous. Being mature doesn't mean degrading to being a song announcer, this was proved by Bob Mabena Mabena as well as Pat & ED when they did the same show..
What a long thread, here's my 2 cents worth by Fishfinger
As much as he would like us to believe, Sbu will not save YFM. Im from Mmabatho so I grew up listening to Radio Bop and that was quality radio then, and YFM is not quality at all. Their DJs are more concerned about saying something stupid so that they can use it in their promos and on top of that they are very ignorant they are clueless about a lot of things.Try to listen to Dineo, when someone tries to speak sense she interrupts and say something stupid. Bimbo Chilli M - He has no timing and some of the things he says are really embarassing for a granddad, flip I have started listening to Fresh.
Sbu can diss Phat Joe all he wants and say he copied stuff from Chris Rock and Jay Leno. He conviniently forgets that his whole radio career is based on Khabzela's style. He used to do a show called Beauty and the beast and it sucked, then he Khabzela passed on and he started doing Kasie radio. He has not evolved since the days of YLens, maybe because it is not his style and he cannot innovate on it so he relies on hype.
Phat Joe on the other hand, has stopped doing disses and other things from YFM. The only thing left from Y is the 8 o clock mix. He is innovative and has introduced a totally new concept to South African radio, called reality radio with that Two Strangers and a Wedding experiment. With that he has:
1. Attracted a new audience with disposable income. Reality TV is addictive and a lot of females I know dig this Wedding thing.
2. Gave advertisers value for money
3. The concept has a lot of spin offs for Kaya. They have a top 100 based on the show and people SMS to choose their fav love songs. SMS costs R2 that means more revenue for KAYA
4. The show is interactive, there is a website and there are adverts on the site, more cash for Kaya
5. The wedding has attracted a lot of sponsors from Castle to minor sponsors, so the wedding will not be that expensive for Kaya.
The wedding concept is not new it has been done overseas but because DJs like Sbu cannot think out of the box, they start to player hate when someone else does it "They r like, Why didnt i think of that?"
2 Strangers & a Wedding wasn't brought to the station by Phat Joe, but by the marketing team...in fact applications were open way before Phat Joe started his show.
I dont think it was Kaya's marketing team that came with the plan, we would have known about it while Jeff & Stevie were doing breakfast.
I remember on April fool's after joe made those two guy to kiss each other, he went on and on that he needs to top that. Eventually he came in and said "Im going to marry two strangers, but i need to think about thoroughly" I guess that is when the marketing team stepped in and helped in organising the show and getting sponsors. And Kaya management decided to make it a Kaya FM wedding instead of a Phat Joe Morning show wedding.
The 2 strangers concept is not new, it has been done overseas but PHAT JOE was the first to bring it locally, the first ever reality radio show
Thank u so much for responding regarding Phat Joe, I really believe that Sbu is playa hating when it comes to Joe.I know that not everyone likes Phat Joe so I can understand some of the comments. But I really am watching Sbu to see what difference is he gonna make in Yfm's revenue.
Radio has come a long way, sadly the content has been reduced to dissing, where the next party at and silly senseless comments. i think that sbu's show is the better show by far on Y compared t all their shows. That station is hoarded by adolscents struggling to get out of puberty while handling a serious job. Yfm needs to review all their content and come up with innovative programmes which hit hard in terms of issues, serving to inform people while providing entertainment. Their out dated pranks are becoming annoying and their over all vision blurry.
I have been observing the number of adverts and endorsement between Sbu's and Phat Joe's show and from what I have observed the revenue gap is massive.
So no matter how Sbu disses Phat Joe, Kaya Fm is laughing all the way to the bank!!!!
