Absolutely! - Marketers must look deep into new consumer's soul
We chase the golden ring, think that we have all answers and know diddly. And it is reflected on our screens, newspapers and magazines. Shallow and lacking in true insight.

Consumers in Europe are starting to show consumer power by only supporting companies with a corporate consciousness about environmental and Fair Trade issues. The era of people being slaves to brands is long over. Tell me what you are going to do in return for my hard earned Rands/Dollars/ Pounds and I may spend money with you. tell me that I am important to your company deserve my custom and I will part with my money. But going Ayoba smoba and I think you are talking kuk!Posted on 25 Nov 2009 16:03
Brillant observations and insight! - Regaining your reputation after the recession: Part 1
Kate
Thank you for your brilliant observations and the insights that you have shared with us. I agree that South African banks have acted in hast and with their own interests at heart in most of the cases. In spite of all the marketing hype about how they 'care' for their customers. Looking at the lists of reposessed vehicles where a client has LESS than R30k outstanding on the vehicle provides ou with proof points of the greed and shortsightedness. The back-lash all over the world as people have lost their homes will be felt for decades to come. Once bitten, twice shy? Nici Richter, StrategistPosted on 25 Nov 2009 15:26

Mzekezeke and de lungwich of myself - Vernacular advertising comes into its own
Kwaito artist Mzekezeke said (and the time and place escapes me) 'The peepol must talk de lungwich of demself"

What stunned me about the South African advertising fraternity is that they did not learn from the popularity of Kwaito music. Kwaito was so much more than a fusion of the pop, reggae, house and rap music genres. IT was an artform that spoke to people in the "lungwich of demself". Young people started buying CDs, clothing and everything else the Kwaito artists adopted or endorsed - paid or not.

Kwaito "blew up" because it was packaged as us speaking to us in the language of us. We all know advertising is never really "us", but the least brands can do is speak to us in the language and (very importantly) the context of us.

regulating branding - Marketers must look deep into new consumer's soul
We are exposed to more commercial content than ever and collectively most of these messages form a common, pervasive & shallow narrative: 'buy me' and you will be(happier, more popular etc.)

if there is a link between the messages we allow into our collective consciousness and our direction as a species are we heading towards a consumption fuelled end?Posted on 25 Nov 2009 14:16

No FIFA Fan Fests in Africa!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - FIFA Fan Fest to connect the world
this is supposed to ba an african World Cup but yet again the rest of Africa is not included in the FIFA 2010 World Cup activaitons.
the Fifa Fan Fest is a great concept that willl benefit millions of soccer loving fans except for Africans!
I think its totally unacceptable that FIFA & the LOC have not thought about havning them in different countries in Africa before approving & organising them in the rest of the world like in Berlin, Mexic City, Lodon etc...........
I would love to know if they even thought about it and if so (giving them the benefit of the doubt), what is the reason why the very africans that have won the rights to host the world cup and will be participating in the tournament are the only ones not benefitting from this (yet again)!!Posted on 25 Nov 2009 14:12

Are reality shows safe for the mentally fragile? - Are reality shows safe for the mentally fragile? [Blog post]
I truly believe that there is nothing stable about the people who go on reality shows and who actually think that they will live happily ever after. That is the first sign of not being mentally strong. What really gets to me(well it actually entertains me)are the girls and guys on the Bachelor and the Bachelorette the desperation, slyness and the methods to acquire their Prince Charming or Princess. But what is truly evident from such shows is that beauty does count for something and it wil go along way.Posted on 25 Nov 2009 13:09

Respecting cultural practises - Maistry moving on to Metro FM
Referring to the topic about culture that was presented on the 24th Nov.I really didn't appreciate the fact that BBK on national radio told Kenny that he must learn an African language(Zulu).BBK learning a language is personal choice by an individual, not a force. And mentioning it so strongly on radio, you are respecting his values and culture.Yes all of us are South Africans, with a right to speak which language that we choose to speak. Please in future if you feel so strongly about a topic, voice your opinion off air rather than on.Thank you!Posted on 25 Nov 2009 07:07
