SABC DA ad ban: The battle continues
I once again pose the question that if the ANC controls the content on SABC then it is no longer a public broadcaster, and therefore we shouldn't have to pay a TV license fee.

Townships are the new black
@VX9256: There may be township dwellers who ASPIRE to experience the lifestyle of some of the characters in soapies - but they are in no way or means MOTIVATED or INFLUENCED by the soapies. I'm telling you this from what I see and experience - I don't go in there to to do research and leave, or go there when there's a Wine Expo/horse racing extravaganza/big music event in the city. I live there.

Point in example: Hunter's was used in Generations at Mam Ruby's tavern. Did sales of Hunter's spike or increase in the township? If you look at their sales figures, you'll find that they didn't. On the other hand, Smirnoff Ice Double Black & Guarana is popular. Yet it wasn't featured in any soapie and I haven't seen any TV ads for it. What 'influenced' people in townships to buy it?

Marketers need to stop treating kasi consumers as mindless sheep. They are able to make up their own minds about what brands they will consume/buy - simplistic ads and product placement just won't cut it anymore. You need to find out what makes them tick and what role the brand can play in their lives. Don't treat them as if they're less 'sophisticated'.

Townships are the new black
Tony Starks - it is not to say that all townships relate or live their lives as per the soapies - but rather are motivated and INFLUENCED by the soapies. There is a lot of truth and relation in terms of what happens in soapies and what people do / aspire to do and be in real life.

Dainette - well written article and a lot of truth on the article - well done.

Challenge now lies with the expense to actually place your product in any soapie or be scripted into the storyline. So the challenge is more of getting involved without being pressured into forking out loads of cash (premium) to have your product placed on the soapie.

Townships are the new black
We agree with this article and as Consumer Communications our main focus is in marketing direct to the township consumers also know as Kasie consumers.
Soapie influence is rife and can be iterpreted from various angles we should not convince ourselves and say consumers will copy but rather say they aspire lifestley in those soapies especially successful characters.
Marketers need to give this market a special attention for growing their brands

JSE unveils a new brand identity
I have just visited the new JSE website. I don't understand how in today's world you could design a site that does not properly resize to a mobile device. The view area bleeds off my tablet. This contradicts the stated objectives of the client 1) showcasing the technology that drives the JSE 2) being more accessible. I suspect that a large portion of visitors to the site will be using tablets. A refreshed logo will not change perception if the user experience is poor.

SABC DA ad ban: The battle continues
ANC Ayisafani-DA advert is a great piece of work, thought provoking not really but a laudable brazen attempt to educate the uneducated and to enlighten the mis-educated. The only offense I can think of under the Advertising Codes (Comparative advertising), DA specifically mentioning ANC and explicitly referring to ANC’s inability to deliver on their promises.

DA continuously poses the need for change, George Orwell’s simplifies DA’s approach by saying “the most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” . It’s an interesting political period in our country indeed and 7 May Ayisafani.

Online property rental simplified
For people looking for property investments, the shortage in student housing creates a lot of opportunity - they can either buy specific properties to convert, or take in students in their own homes - e.g. spare rooms in their homes, or convert extra rooms attached to the property. www.TheRoomLink.co.za is definitely making it possible to rent these out to better quality tenants!

Employment equity report 'disappointing and superficial'
This sort of work is the typical result of putting unqualified (and in the case of two of the commissioners, two people with agendas that are probably very anti business) into positions where they deliberate and pronounce on issues and sectors of which they know nothing and understand nothing.

Tourism Act signed into law
SMME's will benefit if NDT is set to uplift struggling start up industries and the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) keeps a firm had and help where ever they can, to get destination marketing and eco -tourism off the ground. People want an unique experience when they come to visit South Africa. It has been proven over and over.

Townships are the new black
"Soapies are central to township communities and influences what happens around them. It is on television but it is a reflection of what is real in these communities."

This is absolutely not true. Soapies influence absolutely nothing in township dwellers' lives. Do you think Generations or Scandal represent or reflect the lives of someone who lives in Pimville, Newlands West or Nyanga East? Soapies are a fantasy, detached from the reality of residents trying to make a living. It's a form of escape, not a mirror that shows their lives.
