AAD2014 takes to Tshwane skies
It gives me such great pleasure to see this event grow to this magnitude , and also being in the Aerospace and defense industry myself , I concur with what Michelle has already said about the continuous growth and expansion of local companies within the aerospace industry, the development is visible yet slow and with events such as the AAD can also aid with the eccelerate of development and investment . I am a marketing and communication assistant in one of the 3 government initiatives- the Centurion Aerospace Village . Now the Centurion Aerospace Village (CAV) is an initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) to develop a High-Tech Advanced Manufacturing, Aero-Mechanical and Defense Cluster adjacent to the Waterkloof Air force base in Centurion, Tshwane, Gauteng Province. The CAV was established as a result of the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) Supply Chain development programme and is aimed at integrating sub-tier suppliers of the local aerospace and defense industry into the global supply chain. This is done by bringing suppliers in close proximity to one another and to locate them next to tier 1 supplier companies and CAV anchor partners. The local (national) aerospace and defence Industry will benefit from the development of the CAV that will contribute to the industry remaining internationally competitive. Local OEM representatives; OEM suppliers of components, parts and tools, as well as service providers will likewise benefit from synergistic and economy of balanced applications. Other relevant industries and sectors will directly or indirectly benefit from the establishment of the CAV. SMMEs in the relevant sectors will likewise benefit from numerous opportunities that will be identified for further development. The Centurion Aerospace Village (CAV) is the developer and operator of the cluster and is responsible for infrastructure and tenant facility development:• CAV Landside houses industry sub-tier suppliers who do not require runway access that specifically conduct design and manufacturing operations• CAV Airside houses industry sub-tier suppliers who require runway access that specifically do upgrades, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and aircraft refurbishmentsThe CAV is implemented in phases by the application of sourced funding. The planning, development and operations of the CAV as an Aerospace and Defense Supplier Park will be:• Generally directed towards BBBEE and Human Resource Development;• Focused on the encouragement of new small and medium(SMME) sized entrants;• Contributing to skills development; and• Directed towards innovation, technology development and support for associated infrastructure development.CAV has always been part of the AAD show , this event is one of the key event within the industry that brings , key industry players and stakeholders , investors , buyers , sellers , but ordinary people who are fascinated with everything that has to do with aeroplanes , military /security intelligence and weapons. I would encourage everyone to come join us on the 20th and the 21st of september for the air-show , R10 discount on prepaid tickets , R70 Adults and R60 for pensions and kids under 12. Its a date , see you there !Regards Fezile

Attempt to bridge racial divisions at tertiary institutions
Oh quite right True Patriot. Take away all the racist legislation, and I mean ALL of it, and then gradually an utter disappearance of the past attitudes will die out generationally (sorry about that non-word). But until then, forget it.

No execution without court intervention
Thank you for your candid report. I am dealing with a similar situation where the defaulter is in arrears with a rather large amount of maintenance for his children. He himself is a practicing attorney. For 15 years he has refused to adhere to a High Court Maintenance Order, ignored various other orders compelling him to produce financials etc - simply refuses to pay; has no contact with the children, and desires none "out of sight out of mind". But as long as he can hang on to the new E Class Mercedes he is quite "the man". The most recent Writ of Execution against Movable property saw him denying his identity to the sheriff (although he uses the sheriff's courts for his own work #makesOneWonder) the sheriff failing to attach even a small percentage of the debt owed, due to the fact that the debtor had been tipped off, and said sheriff arrived during the "move". We now approach the High Court for a warrant of attachment against immovable property in terms of the High Court Maintenance Order and hope that this will be a little more "user-friendly" - and hopefully less expensive.

A tax of 20% mooted for sugary drinks
This is misguided. I'm all for a leaner society, but this will have as much effect on consumer behaviour as excise on tobacco. That is to say, none. Those tasked with the survey wanted to deliver a cautiously encouraging result to those that sponsored it, but people will get fat in other ways. Corn curls and indolence for a start.Attach a levy on health insurance premiums, airplane tickets. Get direct about it. Don't, as usual, tax those who shouldn't be affected by it. This just a way to burden society with more tax (by pretending the government cares), create needless jobs to collect it all and monitor it, and set up committee upon committee to kick out data that just isn't true.Heck. if the government was so concerned about it, then they would set up disqualifiers for employing civil servants with excessive BMI levels. But they are not going to set the example and take away the sugar from where their mouths are, are they?

Print circulation data shows disturbing trends
Lets actually consider this alleged "trend" which you have referred to, using the latest consumer magazine ABC's which you presumably had in your possession when writing this article. Go to the last page- this page indicates total copy sales through out the country, of the total paid only 0.04% have been sold below 50%. Do the same exercise with the daily newspapers and I think you will find that the situation through out South Africa is even further from what you have described as a growing "trend" . Do your homework before writing such subjective articles, if you want to attack Finweek and The Star etc do so, don't drag the rest of the country in for a bit of sensationalist writing.

Advertising industry must support local musicians
If you were writing this as a South African consumer who has no access to the advertising world, then I would totally understand where it is that you are coming from. But listen carefully...listen to the radio ads and tv ads very carefully and ask yourself, if the track is not renowned, does it necessarily mean that it is library? To purchase well known or popular tracks for advertising used to be affordable for clients. However, with the big publishers managing more artists/ bands and affiliating more to their international standards - license to purchase a popular local track for a short term on an advert can range from R250k - R1m! As a result, clients who are able to afford and also motivate their marketing spend to purchase a popular track as a campaign investment will be able to afford this. But for those brands who trim their budgets, agency creatives and clients have become more astute to give more south african composers briefs to produce music (that you might deem as Library).Listen and listen very carefully to the quality of the back ground music. More and more composers are willing to produce a track for a campaign to beat the Library sounds...The question, that you should be posing well known musicians is - are they willing to adjust themselves and collaborate with the ad industry? There are, but a handful of well known musicians who have woken up to the merits of producing tracks for commercial. We wish that more would come to the fore.Listen, and listen to how the advertising industry has adjusted itself to this category. The SA ad industry has been embrasive by producing Proudly South African adverts - we just need to ensure that we have more ingredient to work with.

There's no such thing as a 10-page website
Amen, SEO is alive and well and still relevant, although quite different from 2 or 3 years ago.Well said!Good content, usability and relevance are important, and key is putting your customer at the centre of it all.I always start with keyword research around the particular niche, and then map out a content plan line by line in Excel, with unique titles and descriptions for each URL. Using a multi-tiered approach, I can see how each piece of content fits neatly within various topic silos.

Unilever sells ice cream to Eskimos
Anon123: Have you never heard of the phrase "S/he could sell ice to an Eskimo"? It's an obvious play on the idiom, insinuating that Unilever has figured out a way to sell ice cream even during the winter months. And while we're Wiki'ing semantics here, "While the term "Eskimo" is sometimes considered offensive, it is not, in its linguistic origins, a fundamentally offensive word..." Our use of this well-known expression (well, it used to be) is obviously in no way meant offensively. Although, since you have taken exception to it, would you have preferred we use "Inuit"?

Print circulation data shows disturbing trends
I am a printer. I will tell you this much, PRINT is busy dying month by month. Ask any printer, the majority of us who run magazine, newspaper and book jobs are all watching the market grow smaller. We have seen countless people start up an edition, watched as it took off and watched as they closed down. People are finding it easier to go online in the comfort of their own home and read something digitally. No paper means no mess in the house, everything can be stored on the net or computer.

"Publishers of newspapers and magazines have been bleeding" . . . and will bleed even more if they don't change current "formulas". I buy three "top" SA home/decor publications. Looking back over the past three years' copies, all three appear to publish the same "features" every month - and have done for three years. Why do I continue to buy, if I'm just getting a rehash of the same goods from all three? Hmmmm . . . perhaps it's time to stop being sentimental about print and go online, to FREE sites . . .

Government needs innovation for service delivery
From my extensive experience in doing staff/ leadership / team building workshops in many public service departments revealed a range of issues that become evident as 1. Bad attitudes,2. Low trust,3. Low engagement, 4. Presenteeism5. workplace conflict...as well as other culture-based additional symptoms that interfere with building a service delivery culture. There is a potent solution, that we incorporate into our team building and leadership development events that transforms this dynamic... but it needs to be more widespread to be fully effective and sustainable to become SA's dominant culture... .www.lifemasters.co.za - Tony Dovale 083-447-6300

I am quite sure that if you had to take the educational copies, airport copies and any other bulk copies out of the true circulation advertising and per copy sales would leave the major press in drastic financial trouble. However it may mean that advertisers will get better overall ROI. Depending on what percentage print plays in their media mix. But this is nothing new. What is new is advertisers measuring other mediums far more carefully and redefining ROI.
