[Abey Mokgwatsane] If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that industry individuals got together on 7 June 2009 to start something new – or SSN, as it is now known. The aim of our gathering was to initiate projects that will create economic value for those less fortunate. Another fundamental that was agreed was that SSN would be a non-profit organisation where any profit would be fed back into the community. We were all OK with this until...

[Terry Levin] Some of you may recall having seen Tyler Brulee, the uber-Euro designer and media mogul via satellite at the Design Indaba in 2004. At the time, we as the custodians of the Bizcommunity brand were inspired to shift our brand a little north of centre, imbuing our 100% homegrown values with a bit of Swiss panache.

[Dr Graeme Codrington] Every other year, Australia and England play a cricket test match series against each other known as the Ashes, competing for the smallest – but arguably most revered - trophy in international sport. This series gets top billing on sports shows, and is hyped beyond belief. And, on Sunday, 23 August, it ended for 2009.

[Louise Marsland: @Louise_Marsland] Did you hear the one about the agency that wouldn’t get out of bed for less than a R10 million account and is now offering services pro bono for up to a year in an attempt to steal clients from smaller agencies?

[Gwen Watkins] Last week’s media preview of
District 9, the new South African sci-fi film, left most of us quite shattered. Not expecting such a performance or to be so engrossed, the film may draw on recognised genres but it delivers the shock and uncomfortable recognition that Paul Verhoeven used to deliver. [video]

[Marion Scher] When quite a while back, former Bizcommunity.com editor and friend
Louise Marsland said I HAD to join Facebook – be in or be out – I jumped to attention and immediately signed up. My 21-year-old son’s reaction was “Ma, you joined Facebook – that’s so lame...” That, of course, made me feel much better about my choice.

[Abey Mokgwatsane] Some of you may remember I wrote a post I want to start something new, a while back. My inspiration was to apply creative skill to brainstorm ideas for solutions to the challenges we face today.Since deadlines inspire action, I mentioned that by 7 July 2009 something would be in progress. I also put it out there that should any other creatives have ideas worth pursuing, they should join ‘the cause'.

[Louise Marsland: @Louise_Marsland] The challenging times we are in are times of opportunity and growth and it is your attitude which will determine your success during these tough times. That’s the view of one of the 100 most influential people in the world (as voted by
Time): author and trend maker, Malcolm Gladwell.

[Louise Marsland: @Louise_Marsland] Discovery CEO Adrian Gore was witty, direct and engaging this morning in addressing the attributes of success. He presented a handy popular business roadmap (drawn mostly from business books out there) that seemed to promote the journey to success as such: ‘You drop out of college... come up with an idea... start a business in your garage... and become a millionaire overnight.’
