Cannes Lions 2017

Le Blog

This is the communal blog of Jenny Glover and Brent Singer, joint ECDs at Net#work BBDO who are off to Cannes Lions 2013. Together, the two have won five Gold Lions (four of those being Campaign Lions) and one Cannes Grand Prix in their four years of working together. Throughout the festival, they will bring regular updates on what's happening, as well as the overall feel at Cannes.

[Cannes Lions 2013] Part party, part business

Jenny Glover: This blog is constructed much like a mullet – the haircut, not the fish – in that it is part party, part business.

On the business side, we watched Jack Black (looking very much like he should be guarding a bridge) chat about his online series work for Yahoo. Did it change my perception of advertising as we know it? No. Did I have a bit of a laugh? Why yes. He's a funny guy is Mr Black.

The Print and Outdoor shortlists also came out yesterday and South Africa racked up a respectable tally of finalists. Congrats to Y&R, TBWA, Ogilvy, Lowe and yes, Net#work. Of course, it's the conversions that count so let's see what happens.

In the meantime, the South African contingent is getting drinking fit, chugging back many a glass of overpriced rosé wine. Do not judge; this is the one place in the world where it's OK to drink rosé. Back home, rosé may be the wine equivalent of glitter nails and a bejeweled Ed Hardy hat but here in Cannes it can be drunk in broad daylight.

Despite all this drinking, things are still pretty classy. Be warned, though, this will not be true later in the week.

In the days to come, I will awake with pain equivalent to a corneal paper cut. I will not have enough saliva to lick even a single postage stamp. I will laugh at toilet jokes due to our vastly diminished intellectual capacity. My height and hip measurement will eventually become one in the same, but no one with hear my feeble complaints because my mouth will be full of delicious nine-cheese pasta. My sparkling-water-drinking partner will treat me with all the tenderness of a morgue technician. It will not be pretty.

Brace yourself, this is going to get messy.
