BlackBerry writing – watch out

05 Jul 2010 11:57:00

Ask any language purist and they'll tell you how technology is affecting the English language - in other words, watching it go down the tubes...

How many of you dash off an email, only to look at it later and see the horrendous mistakes you've made - but you think hey, the other guy will know what I mean?

And just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, along comes BlackBerry and smaller keyboards and ‘worse' takes on a whole new meaning.

I received an email via Blackberry the other day which went something like this, "Ys I agre parent cjild input os very necessary. Wll look inot ti." And, no, the writer isn't dyslexic.

When the sender got my reply, where I mentioned she might want to re-look at this before sending it to anyone else, she apologised and said her fingers had been cold. The writer by the way is a freelance journalist! And had this been the actual pitch she was about to send to an editor I can't imagine the editor's reaction. Well, yes I can - they'd can it.

Today everyone does their own correspondence but sadly not everyone can spell nor write a grammatically correct sentence. Gone, it seems, are the days when people had secretaries - do they even exist anymore? There are PAs - but do they take dictation? Does anyone learn shorthand or speedwriting these days? When a secretary had taken dictation or transcribed from the Dictaphone, the results were presented for the boss to look over before signing and I have a feeling that in those days very few mistakes were found.

The trouble today is that bosses are sending their own communications and these are generally dismal - and now with BlackBerry even worse.

The moral of the story - read your messages out loud. It takes a few seconds and can really prevent a red face and the impression that you're illiterate!

So true!-
Just yesterday, I was mortified to find out that an email I had sent to a client says "Could you kindly point me in the right "condition" instead of "direction"?

I was so embarrased! I usually pride myself as a good writer and I have no idea how I could have missed that. But I think I forgot to read again before clicking send. Posted on 6 Jul 2010 12:58

Agreed 100%-
I absolutely agree. For me, the problems started long before with Facebook and SMS shorthand messaging.
Sadly, each new generation of kids grow up with an even more abbreviated and "acceptable" level of typing. Posted on 9 Jul 2010 09:58

Spell Check-
I found that the spell check on Black Berry is very useful. I run the spell check before each email cos i know how bad my typing can be with the small keyboard. Posted on 12 Jul 2010 12:51

Certainly-
English is not my mother-tongue, but I cringe when I receive communications in the Mxit format of spelling. And honestly, often times I do not know what the sender was saying. There are beauty in good communication, applied vocabulary and in my opinon, good manners.

I've also noticed how capital letters are used without discretion. Nobody seems to realise that that is considered screaming.

And no, I'm not an old fart. I have a BlackBerry, I'm a commercial photographer by trade (not a wordsmith) and I'm in my early thirties. I think we might be the last generation standing between total innihilation of good communication and total literary anarchy. Posted on 14 Sep 2010 11:29

Couldn't have said it better-
I have forever been considered the spell champ in my circle of friends and I try at all times to encourage proper grammar, spelling and sentence construction amongst my friends as they are, funny enough, in high positions as strategists etc. but their writing is just hideous (and that is me being nice).

Really enjoy your blogs and love your tone and writing style. Posted on 29 Mar 2011 16:13
