[Cannes Lions] Nobody knows what’s going to happen next

22 Jun 2010 12:53:00

CANNES, FRANCE: It's strange talking to the judges here. There really is a sense that nobody knows what's going to happen next. Advertising has become so all-encompassing, it's really become hard to define. From a South African perspective, I believe we have about 12 months to take some quantum leaps.

Those leaps have to be about the way work connects to each other and to the consumer. I think as a country we have always punched above our weight because the work we did was world-class. But the world is changing and many agencies around the world run the risk of looking old-fashioned.

I believe since advertising began, we as an industry always were on the cutting edge of culture and technology. When I look around at Cannes, there are many who are battling to keep up with the tsunami and a few who are trying to learn to surf very quickly. We need to ask the question: what will an agency look like in five years?

Day 5

#Cannes. Finished judging. All that energy, champagne and an anticlimax. Some very great work after a tough year globally. Let's celebrate.

Stepped out of a dark judging room and looked over to the balcony to see thousands of shiny people. Chaos replaces the quiet. The many sides of Cannes.

#Cannes. The cover of Cannes daily - interruption versus integration the big debate. My view interrupt first and then integrate.
