[Cannes Lions] Advertising's at a crossroadsBy: Damon Stapleton 21 Jun 2010 18:27:00 In 10 years we will see this as the crossroads. Yesterday I saw 3d TV without glasses. I judged the Outdoor category and never saw a billboard. And the concept of digital meeting and shaping our daily reality is here. The truth is if advertising simply informs these days it will fail. Involvement is a word that gets thrown around a lot, yet the best work in the world has this as its cornerstone. Advertising as a monologue is over. Outdoor was the pantheon of traditional advertising values and now has become the place where digital is not on your computer, it's in your life. Tweets Below are my tweets since I arrived in Cannes. Never get tired of those buildings with the little French shutters. Rude French waiters. They don't care about you and you love them because they don't. Fantastic stylish sadism. At the dinner for judges. French wine and foreign accents make complete sense. Day two Day 1 of judging begins. A couple of thousand entries. A room with a view of a topless beach. The universe can be so cruel. 3000 entries to judge. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Day three Watched Algeria play England in an Irish pub in France, with two Indians, an Argentinean and a Japanese guy. That's Cannes in a nutshell. So many entries, so little time. Some of these entry videos should get a Lion for production values. Day three Here comes the shortlist and hopefully some violent agreement. Just finished the shortlist. Now for the mass debate. Day four Start looking at metal today. Finished at ten last night, plenty of debate. Trust me if you made the shortlist that is an achievement.
