The nine-to-five drag
[Johann M. Smith] Oh, Mondays! The restart of commerce culture's tyrannical conformity cycle: a nine-to-five, strike-the-clock drag that supposedly improves your life more than it ruins it. Better start seeking the beauty in the invisible, or become a chain-smoking heartless bastard. 16 Jul 2012 11:44
Ballet on the big screen
[Eugene Yiga] What's the greatest ballet of all time? A tough question, no doubt. Fortunately for Cape Town residents, there's no need to choose just one. That's because The Fugard Bioscope's World Opera and Ballet Season will be screening over a dozen performances over the next 12 months. 13 Jul 2012 10:50
Burn the Floor combusts
[Daniel Dercksen] There has never been anything like this on stage in Cape Town, ever! Burn The Floor not only sent temperatures shooting through the roof at its opening in Cape Town last night, but also had Capetonians almost spontaneously combusting with two overpowering standing ovations, following raucous cheering and energetic response during the performance. 12 Jul 2012 14:54
Life after loss in The Blue Iris
[Eugene Yiga] He may be 80, but that hasn't stopped eminent playwright Athol Fugard from doing what he loves. "There are so many stories to tell!" he said. The latest of these gems is The Blue Iris, showing at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 21 August to 7 October following its sell-out world premiere at the National Arts Festival in Grahmstown and an extended run at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town 11 Jul 2012 11:36
Fugard's Blue Iris
[Daniel Dercksen] Athol Fugard's compelling The Blue Iris is a consummate masterwork that will break your heart and shake you to the core. Celebrating life, love and the haunting memories of a tragedy that shapes the lives of a Karoo farmer, his wife and housekeeper, it is an intelligent play that showcases the genius of one of the greatest playwrights of our time, and is a crowning glory to his 80th birthday. 10 Jul 2012 09:46
Laughs from the past in Defending The Caveman
[Eugene Yiga] Have you ever wondered why men don't ask for directions? What about why women need so much cupboard space? Many of us have, which probably explains why Defending The Caveman has been such a phenomenal success. From its start in San Francisco over 20 years ago, this "date comedy" has now been seen by over 8 million people in 45 countries around the world (and still holds the record for the longest running solo play in Broadway history). Fortunately for those who missed it before, it's back for another South African season so more of us can see it too. 9 Jul 2012 14:16
[GNAF] Blue Iris
[Duan Wanty] We celebrate Athol's 80th birthday this year and, to add to the celebration, he has blessed us with a new piece of work that stays true to his legacy. It is exciting to see him adding work to his already reputable canon. 9 Jul 2012 13:01
Weekend feast
[Daniel Dercksen] If you are looking for a weekend of fun, the entertainment front is alive with a feast for everyone; there's music, laughs and thrills on the big screen this weekend. 6 Jul 2012 11:33
[GNAF] Red sells out at Grahamstown
[Duan Wanty] A theatre piece with outstanding theatre legend Michael Richard is as good as they get; you expect a thrilling performance. This year, with the premier of the 2010 Tony Award-winning play Red, you get just that and a little bit more. 5 Jul 2012 10:05
Weekend of change
[Daniel Dercksen] Change your life this weekend and take a first step in becoming a playwright by attending The Drama of Writing a Play at the PANSA studio in Woodstock, Cape Town; explore your dramatic flair and expose the dramatist within. 29 Jun 2012 12:06
Drama on the big screen
[Daniel Dercksen] If there's one live musical show you cannot miss on the big screen, it's the screening of Stephen Sondheim's sensational musical drama, Company. Staged by the world-famous New York Philharmonic, Company was recorded live from the Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center, New York in 2011 and is now screening in cinemas outside the US for the first time, and in SA exclusively at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau Theatres on 28 and 30 June and 1 July only, so make sure not to miss it, no matter what. 26 Jun 2012 14:07
Culture weekend
[Daniel Dercksen] Have you ever thought of writing a play and sharing your thoughts and creative talent with the world? If you're in Cape Town there's a free introduction session on The Drama of Writing a Play at the Pansa studio in Woodstock. Who knows, your play might headline one of the many festivals in South Africa and be seen on stage at a theatre near you. 22 Jun 2012 10:44
New life for old music in Topsy Turvy
[Eugene Yiga] I didn't know what to expect. Gilbert and Sullivan? I'd heard the names before and I knew they had something to do with music. More than that, I honestly couldn't say. Fortunately for me, Topsy Turvy was here to educate my clueless mind. And judging by what I experienced, I suggest you let it educate you too. 18 Jun 2012 10:49
Playing with politics in Adapt or Fly
[Eugene Yiga] Government censorship. Racial tension. A country that could very well fall apart. With a democracy that's long since come of age, you'd think that we'd be over these issues by now. Alas, we're not. Our dysfunctional political scene gives comedians plenty of material to work with. And who better to take advantage of the times than master satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys? Thirty years after his controversial show about the apartheid regime, he's back with more in Adapt or Fly. 15 Jun 2012 12:08
