News channel will strengthen media diversity

Government says the launch of South Africa's third 24-hour news channel will work towards strengthening media diversity in the country.

Phumla Williams, the acting CEO of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), congratulated the Africa News Network (ANN7) - which was launched by The New Age Media, in Sandton on Wednesday night.

"The new station will contribute immensely to South Africa's dynamic media industry. Government wishes ANN7 all of the best in their endeavor," Williams said.

She also said the new entrant would provide a platform that will further shape public discourse on pertinent matters.

ANN7 will be headquartered at Midrand in Gauteng, and according to a media statement on the news channel's website, it will focus on "constructive, nation-building stories in the interests of building a culture of unity and pride in SA".

Amongst those who have been named as the channel's new presenters include former cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi, who will host a weekly talk show Straight Talk and businesswoman Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon, who will host Vuka Africa. Kwaito artist Arthur Mafokate will host a weekly sport show called Hola Weekend.
