Panos Eastern Africa continues support for Press Clubs

Panos Eastern Africa (PEA) has sponsored equipment, including computers and video cameras, for five of the Press Club Project organisations.

The handover and setup of the fully furnished resource centres.
Panos Eastern Africa with support from Danida, Norad and DFID launched the Press Club Project in July 2005. Specifically, PEA has mentored the establishment and or strengthening of regional press clubs as democratic institutions that are effective, relevant and capable of making a difference in terms of professional solidarity, and development-oriented journalism.

These press clubs are independent, voluntary, non-governmental, membership-based-and-driven as well as regional.

It is almost two years since these clubs were formed and they have been ably articulated members’ professional concerns as well as trade union matters. They have instilled a sense of belonging to the members, fostered professional solidarity, promoted professionalism including identifying members’ training needs.

During the month of February 2007, PEA distributed equipment to the best five performing press clubs.
