[BizPod 002] OPA chair Adrian Hewlett on the inaugural Bookmarks

19 Nov 2008 17:244 commentsBizLike
Last week saw the inaugural Bookmarks awards ceremony being held in Johannesburg. A lot has been said since, both offline and online (including Twitter). In episode two of BizPod/Interactive, Bizcommunity.com's new podcast which aims to unpack all the latest trends in digital marketing and social media, host Japie Swanepoel chats to Adrian Hewlett, chairman of the Online Publishers Association (OPA), about the good, the bad and the ugly of the event.
Everything - from the origin of the awards, the international judges, nominees having to pay for event tickets, categories with no winners, creative versus ROI type entries and those confidential documents that were distributed on the showreel CD - is discussed.

Remember, you don't need an iPod to listen to our podcast; you can listen online using the audio player, or download the audio file to your computer and listen to it on your mp3 player.

Well answered Adrian-
Some tough questions from Japie, but I thought you answered them well and with integrity.

Regarding the questions on ROI (I guess I have to comment on this as we're the ROI guys..)I think it all depends what the intention of the OPA/Bookmarks is. If its to award digital creativity, then the current awards are perfect. If its to award digital marketing excellence then they need to change to using actual performance and where possible ROI as the dominant factor in judging the entries.

However from a pure economic perspective, the ROI awards probably wouldn't serve the direct interests of the OPA members and as such they won't have the incentive to create them. And whilst I would love to see an award for eMarketing excellent in SA, I can't say I blame them.

Either way, I for one appreciate every effort to raise the profile of digital marketing in SA and I sincerely thank the OPA for the hard work they are putting in. Nice one guys!

Cheers,

Rob (Quirk eMarketing)

PS, Adrian, the OPA site doesn't work without a www... Posted on 19 Nov 2008 19:22

Fantastic Evening - Well done-
Dear OPA team,

I would like to congratulate you guys on a fantastic event. The breakfast was really informative and it created fantastic networking opportunities, and I would like to see this happen next year again.

To have been part of the positive vibe after the awards ceremony made me realise how committed everybody is in this industry, and as one of the nominees said to me, "this is the online industry's own awards ceremony, what more recognition does one need than being nominated".

Well done to all involved and I look forward to an even bigger and better show next year. Who knows, maybe even in Cape Town :)

Regards,

Well done Adrian-
Adrian, well done to you and your exco for having the determination and drive to get this off the ground. It was a great start - with room for improvement in 09. Why was Biz-Comunity so critical? Its easy to carp from the sidelines, but its the doers who deserve praise otherwsie nothing would ever happen. Well done Posted on 20 Nov 2008 10:31

And the website?-
Must be honest, haven't listened to the podcast yet - will do when I have a gap.
But am finding it extraordinarily ironic that the website for the Bookmarks STILL hasn't been updated since the awards - the last time it had any new info was on 31 October.
Am I missing the point, or is someone else? Posted on 20 Nov 2008 14:37
