The AISA Young Graduates and Scholars (AYGS) Programme is a research capacity building project. The programme was conceived in 2005 with the aim of building a body of knowledge and to project the African 'voice' through various discourses about the continent. It further intends to span the existing gap of expertise in knowledge production on African affairs by developing a society of knowledge producers among the youth.
Although conflicts and official deaths on the African continent have declined in recent years, the incidence and magnitude of violence continue to present the largest and complex part of threats to the institutionalisation and consolidation of peace, human security and sustainable development. Currently, 44 out of 53 countries on the continent are experiencing instability of some measure - ranging from armed conflict to inter-communal strife, political violence, disputed border conflicts, austerity and/or food riots, and targeted attacks. While several countries face increased risk of armed violence, only a few are emerging from protracted wars. In the past decade alone, millions have been killed and many more maimed and displaced, left vulnerable to disease, malnutrition and poverty. These conflicts have disrupted infrastructure like housing, health, education and transportation and also degraded the continent's natural ecosystems. In addition, the conflicts have traumatised many communities and eroded the social fabric and authority structures among and across local communities.
By all considerations, war by itself is a costly exercise that serves as a hindrance to Africa's development. For this reason, we are hosting the conference to promote and support the contribution of Africans to conflict resolution and peacekeeping operations on the continent. This is the opportunity for young scientists and policy makers to share, transfer and adapt the development of science and technology, sustainable development, democratic participation and effective governance. In addition, the conference will also endeavour to promote the development, management and protection of African intellectually property.
