Entries for the Discovery Health Journalism Awards 2011 have opened for journalists that produced work across the healthcare sector in South Africa that was published or broadcast between 1 January and 31 December 2011. The closing date for entries is 3 February 2012 and the awards ceremony will take place in May 2012.
Following last year's competition, the judges commented that they would like to see more media houses enter the competition and engage in health journalism. "We would like to urge more broadcast journalists to enter into the awards as the categories are medium neutral," said Professor Tawana Kupe, the convener of the judging panel and Dean of Humanities at the University of Witswaterand. "As a judging panel, we would like to see more accurate reporting on scientific facts, journalism that has multiple perspectives and more South African context specificity," he concluded.
