Strike looms in Nigeria

South Africa is currently in the grip of a strike by government workers; now there is a threat of as big a strike in Nigeria.

Lagos - Nigeria's main trade union movement has urged people to stockpile food ahead of a looming general strike, officials said, less than 10 days after President Umaru Yar'Adua took office.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the umbrella body for all workers both in the private and public sectors, early this week gave the government 14 days to reverse increases in fuel prices and value added tax. The deadline expires on June 18.
