Loeries 2009 host city out to tender

5 Sep 2008 16:1011 commentsBizLike
Margate, Sun City, Johannesburg or Cape Town? After reviewing a long list of possible towns, The Loerie Awards has invited these four host cities/locations to submit proposals to host the 2009 Awards ceremony. The tender deadline is the last week of September 2008 [poll].
The Loeries Committee has been involved in discussions around hosting the awards at different locations around South Africa, and the decision has been taken to invite proposals so that the benefits of the different options could be carefully assessed.

“We've held the Loeries in Margate for four years,” says Festus Masekwameng, chairman of The Loerie Awards. “It's certainly a strong contender in the process, but the committee has received a lot of feedback from the industry, as well as interest from other cities. We wanted an opportunity to evaluate a shortlist of venue options.”

The tender deadline is the last week of September, after which the Loeries Committee will review the pitches. A final decision will be made in October this year.

“Margate and Sun City both offer a contained, small-town environment, which creates more of a getaway atmosphere,” says Masekwameng. “Johannesburg and Cape Town both offer big city infrastructures, and each option brings with it opportunities and challenges.”

Have your say - vote now in our poll: Which city should host the 2009 Loeries?

Small Town or Resort-
I really believe very strongly that a big town shouldn't host the awards - the vibe created (even in blerrie Margate) by having the whole industry together in a handful of small pubs/clubs is awesome. However, moving the event to Cape Town or somewhere else grooter will mean that after the ceremony everyone will disperse to their favourite little spot and never see each other again.
Come on people, keep the gees! Posted on 8 Sep 2008 11:25

Why Cape Town?-
Unless there are plans to have the awards in LATE Spring or Summer, Cape Town should not be considered at all. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 12:17
George /Knysna-
What about George/Knysna
Even East London and PE - all have good airports and will be great options. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 13:57

It should be Durban-
Durbs has a fantastic vibe filled with cool culture and down to earth people. A mix between Cape Town and Jozi.

Love Durbs!!

And there will be plenty of great accomodation.. Posted on 8 Sep 2008 15:07
Kiddies jol-
These comments just prove what a ridiculous kiddies jol the Loeries are. Nobody is concerned about the environment that would lend itself best to a professional awards ceremony that recognises excellent business results, real workshops and mature interaction of a proper buisiness industry. All anybody wants to know is how much of a party they can have there. Which is why the Loeries will continue its fizzle. Posted on 11 Sep 2008 14:25
Pro and cons-
All of these cities have their own pros and cons. Durban could be cool, i'll give you that. Although for us creatives up on the highveld CT would be a treat. The small town vibe is cool but hanging with all of us "up our own arse" ad people for a whole weekend can get a bit much, that's why it would be great to disperse to other spots for a jol. PARTY POOPER-
Refers to:
- Mr Seriuos who claims Loeries are a kiddies jol...mayb about business but whats a lil business without the pleasure...face it, ur "mature" arse doesnt go 2 bed after the ceremony either. why must u stick needles in other peopl's haystax???
- Cape Town: will by far provide the most fucked up weather in July...we want to see those feminine thighs we've been seeng 4 so long as well as those muscular legs that pop out @ Velocity parties! im starting a petition against Cape Town or "Tik- mother city"...keep the drugs in ur hotel rooms, we dont want the whole of CT being exposee to wat the industry is tuly about(truth be told now)
-JOBURG: NO!NO!NO! u'l opening it up to the masses, the death of the Loeries i tell u!

I reckon:
-Keep the small town, small crowd vibe. this is about the only time the industry gets 2gether without all the others butting in...otherwise, we'll have the Loeries turn in2 SAMAs, i dont think we want that.
-Im all for KZN's weather& atmosphere...im also all 4 Sun City again actually. anything but the mass provinces. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 14:31

Margate - has an Airport-
Just a comment and 'food for thought'.
Margate has perfectly good airport serviced by SAAirlink, all these concerns re the new DIA are unfounded.
The issue is the link with Mango who fly into DIA. Margate offers winter sunshine and an ocean you can swim in without freezing and of good quality (blue flag status). The Cape is great in February, hellish in the middle of the Cape Doctor. Posted on 23 Sep 2008 13:07
