University of Zimbabwe still closed

The University of Zimbabwe, which has been closed for five months, could reopen its doors next month. University authorities have informed the government that the university will reopen on 6 July 2009.
However, lecturers at the institution have poured cold water on the claim. They said they were not willing to resume lectures until their salary disputes were resolved. Some lecturers said they had not been paid since November last year.

Besides salary problems, the university still has no water. New boreholes drilled on campus are contaminated. More than 6,000 local and foreign students are enrolled at the institution. The closures have resulted in some students falling a year behind in their studies.
