Angolan social communication minister to attend CNN/Multichoice Awards

19 Jul 2012 13:40
The Angolan social communication minister, Carolina Cerqueira, left Luanda on yesterday, 18 July 2012, for Zambia, to witness the awards ceremony of the CNN Multichoice African Journalism Awards on Saturday, 21 July, in Lusaka.
Speaking to Angop [Angolan Press] at Luanda's "4 de Fevereiro" International Airport before leaving, Cerqueira said she has been invited by the organisation to witness the awarding of prizes to the best journalists of Africa.

From Lusaka, the Angolan minister will travel to Livingstone (Zambia) to attend the launch of a new Terrestrial Digital Transmission service called GOTv.

GOTv follows a partnership between MultiChoice and the Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).

The CNN Multichoice African Journalism Awards is the most prestigious and respected award for journalists across the African continent. Its objective is to reinforce the importance of the role of journalists in Africa's development and to reward, recognise and encourage journalistic talent across all media disciplines.

The 'CNN African Journalist of the Year Competition' was established in August 1995 to encourage, promote and recognise excellence in African journalism. In the early nineties Edward Boateng, then regional director of Turner Broadcasting (CNN's parent company), was travelling around the African continent on business. During his travels he became concerned about the lack of respect journalists received and he decided to try and help them gain recognition for their hard work and commitment.
