Samsung launches consumer education campaign in support of 49M

Samsung SA became the first South African consumer electronics brand to take the 49M pledge in 2012, which is aligned to a government-endorsed programme aimed at encouraging a national culture of energy saving. Samsung is making it effortless for consumers to contribute to sustainability in their daily lives by simply choosing products that boast innovative technology and "A" energy ratings, all of which intentionally save precious resources such as electricity and water.

Michelle Potgieter, director of corporate marketing and communications of Samsung South Africa, said: "This national consumer education campaign will assist consumers with the necessary information to make their homes more efficient and will aid not only to save electricity, but also contribute towards reducing their utility bills. We are proud that Samsung can in this way contribute to energy reduction, by providing advice to consumers."

Actions can be taken by homeowners

By adding the 49M logo with an energy-saving label to all Samsung energy efficient products, actions can be taken by homeowners to reduce their electricity consumption. The information label will be visible on the outer packaging of Samsung's extensive range of eco-friendly solutions, including refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens, dishwashers, cameras, printers, notebooks, air-conditioners, LED lighting, LED televisions and monitors. This will be the consumers' guarantee that they are buying energy-efficient products and also offer handy energy-saving tips relevant to the specific product category.

As part of Samsung's PlanetFirst initiative and its commitment to become one of the world's most environmentally friendly companies, Samsung has a dedicated goal to develop sustainable solutions.

At the end of 2013, 100% of Samsung's products are set to receive global environmental certifications. In addition, earlier this year Samsung also received the Energy Star partner of the year Sustainable Excellence Award and three Eco-Design honours, to be showcased at the forthcoming International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014.

"Samsung aligns product innovation with eco efficiency, all while addressing key local needs. Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious and demand products that consider conservation while still being sleek, sophisticated and elegant. We are not only committed to providing sustainable solutions, but also believe in educating our customers that smart decisions on the shop floor will lead to savings for years to come," added Potgieter.

This initiative comes shortly after the announcement that Samsung was awarded ISO 50001 certification, the international energy standard, across all of its global business sites. This accreditation was received through its commitment to energy efficiency, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the entire business by 57% since 2008.
