UCT and GetSmarter launch Web Development short course

Our real and online worlds continue to merge as we increasingly shop, communicate, conduct business, and learn online. Having a strong and active online presence is crucial for the success of any business in 2014, regardless of the size or industry. A strong online presence requires an attractive and user-friendly website, making use of responsive web design to provide users with content that is easily accessible across all digital devices.
The University of Cape Town (UCT) and leading online education company, GetSmarter, have identified a need for improved knowledge of web development practices, and are proud to announce the launch of the University of Cape Town Web Development short course. This part-time short course runs for 10 weeks, commencing on 24 March 2014, and is presented entirely online throughout South Africa. Rob Paddock, co-managing director of GetSmarter, comments on the launch of the course:
"In today's highly connected world, the rapidly evolving digital landscape has created an exponential increase in the demand for competent web developers. We're hugely excited about the launch of the UCT Web Development short course to provide web developers throughout South Africa with the theory and skills they need to advance their careers, and validate their skills with Africa's top University - UCT."
About the course

The course focuses on responsive web development using Open-source software, which involves building and optimising a website for consistency across multiple web browsers and devices. The course will also equip students with the know-how to implement search engine optimisation techniques and strategies to their website, ensuring optimum ranking during a Google search. In this course, students will use the leading open-source web tool, WordPress, which is widely used globally as the preferred Open-source Content management system. HTML5 and CSS3 will also be covered, as they are both used for coding interactive and responsive websites. Upon completion of the course, students will have confidently designed and developed a fully-functional website.

The course will be instructed by highly skilled web developer and designer, Laurian Miles, who has extensive experience in digital marketing and web editing. The sole proprietor of Mantaray design studio, Laurian is a strong supporter of the open-source movement and its contribution to web development, as well as knowledge sharing. She is a firm believer in the benefits and relevance of learning web development using open-source software:
"Web development is a growing industry. It offers a variety of careers, and opens the door for skilled and self-driven individuals to work in established web development teams for organisations (big or small), or as entrepreneurs and freelancers where there is a real opportunity to run an online web development business."
Who should attend this course?

The continuous innovation that characterises today's online space means that careers in web development have increased, and are constantly evolving to keep up with the product and service needs of consumers online.

After gaining a strong grounding in the fundamental principles of web development, students will be able to gain entry into the web development industry. For people already working in related fields, such as web design and online marketing, this course will provide complimentary skills for their current roles, increasing their personal value to the organisation. This course is also suited to entrepreneurs and business owners who are looking for the necessary skills to create an eCommerce website for their enterprise, or those looking to work on a freelance basis.

Learning online

GetSmarter's highly interactive online learning model allows course participants to study anywhere and anytime, while still receiving personal, proactive support throughout the course. All short courses are presented entirely online, requiring a computer with an internet connection, a valid email address, and a word processing program.

With all due respect...I'm not sure about the "premier" part.
The once course I did online was nice but the usefulness of its paperwork (certificate) is extremely limited.

The fact that GetSmarter is affiliated to UCT doesnt mean much as one cant really convert the short certificate to credits. With the amount of money one pays for these courses surely this organization could leverage its relationship with big institutions and make them credit-bearing?

THAT would make it real value for money.

"once course" should read "one course"
