CTICC puts 2.5 millionth visitor in the spotlight
Issued by: CTICC

One lucky Capetonian became the 2.5 millionth visitor to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and was personally congratulated by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Premier Ebrahim Rasool.

Thandi Hamana, of Pinelands, had arrived at CTICC to attend the Lifestyle SA Festival – Celebrating Black, the aspirational show that celebrates the contribution of the African population to the economy. She first heard the words “Congratulations, this is your lucky day: you are the 2.5 millionth visitor to the CTICC” when CTICC managing director, Dirk Elzinga, stopped her in the centre's foyer.

Hamana was called to the stage during the show's ribbon-cutting ceremony where she was handed her prize by the Deputy President. She was presented with a CTICC goodie bag which included a voucher for a weekend at the Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa in Hermanus. Elzinga also gave her a magnum of champagne and a bouquet of flowers on arrival at the CTICC.

One of 12 000 people due to attend the three-day festival, Hamana, who was in Cape Town with her husband, Khaya, said she was thrilled with the prizes and delighted to share in CTICC's success.

CTICC managing director Dirk Elzinga said that achieving 2.5 million visitors in the short period of the centre's existence was a momentous achievement for the CTICC.

“This is a major milestone and exceeds our most optimistic expectations. We are still a very young convention centre and this number of visitors reflects the tremendous support we have had from the business community and general public and the recognition we have had from the international conference community.”

CTICC first opened its doors in June 2003 and recorded its first million visitors in June 2005. In June 2008 CTICC will celebrate its 5th birthday.

“Our growth over the past four years has been increasing in momentum as has the multi-million rand spin-off and job opportunities we have provided in the region,” said Elzinga. “The increase in visitors at CTICC augurs well for both the City of Cape Town and the larger Western Cape community.”
