Marlise Scheepers, a senior Sondag journalist since the newspaper's launch in April 2007, recently released her debut album, Stokalleen.
While in her second year at the University of the Northwest, Marlise wrote Hei Mevrou Brown for an Afrikaans teacher who inspired her to love the language.
“I entered the song in a competition where Laurika Rauch was a judge. She heard the song and asked me if she could record it. Of course I agreed! Laurika made the song the title track of one of her albums,” Marlise explains.
Marlise got into music while still at school. “I used to play on my sister's guitar when she wasn't home. Eventually, I bought my own,” she says.
Combining journalism at Sondag and kicking off her music career, Marlise says, “I love being a journalist as much as I enjoy being a musician. They fit together well as when I attend a festival, I get to write the article for the newspaper, too,” she adds.
