Workshop series launched ahead of GirlCode Hackathon

GirlCode, a non-profit organisation aimed at empowering women through technology, has introduced The GirlCode Hackathon Workshop Series. The set of workshops is designed to offer participants the opportunity to improve their craft before competing in the Hackathon event taking place from 4 to 6 August 2017, in celebration of Women's Month.

“The idea to introduce workshops was conceived following feedback from participants in previous years. We know that women and girls enter the GirlCode Hackathon for fun, but we also know they do so to improve their skills. So we wanted to offer them more opportunities to do so earlier in the process,” says Zandile Keebine, chairwoman of GirlCode.

“The Hackathon empowers the participants with the real-world skills they need. This year, we want to offer our participants more than a once-off event. We hope that it can also be the chance to build a network of like-minded people through these workshops and hopefully find some mentors along the way too.”

The Workshop Series will take place every month starting in February 2017 where various corporate sponsors in and around Johannesburg will be running half day workshops on a variety of topics. The topics are carefully designed to give participants the best chance to compete and win at the Hackathon 2017 competition in August.

Topics by month

• February: Software development fundamentals
• March: Design thinking
• April: Web development
• May: Mobile app development
• June: Business model
• July: Elevator pitching
• August: GirlCode Hackathon

Dates for the workshops will be released over the coming months on GirlCode's website.
