National launch of the Making the Difference Through Design Competition
Issued by: Sappi

Woolworths, together with the Western Cape Education Department, Design Indaba and Sappi, launched the “Making the Difference Through Design” educational initiative in 2006. Initially piloted at some 120 schools in the Western Cape during the 2006 school year, ‘Making the Difference Through Design' has received accolades from curriculum developers, administrators and teachers and was rolled out nationally during 2007.

Developed in co-operation with the Western Cape Education Department, the programme is based around a colourful, 600-plus page file that takes learners and teachers on an exciting voyage of discovery through the many aspects of the fascinating design world. ‘Making the Difference Through Design' provides a wealth of information, insights and activities which will assist teachers in guiding learners to achieve the required outcomes-based learning objectives. Containing more than 80 case studies by top South African designers, as well as projects and assessment guidelines, it is not only an invaluable resource for teachers, but an inspiration for future designers.

The programme comprises of 23 modules divided into four broad categories: Visual Communication Design, Surface Design, Product Design and Environmental Design. These categories cover subjects as diverse as advertising design, textile design, industrial design, animation, jewellery and ceramic design, architectural design and theatrical set design.

Woolworths announced the third annual Making the Difference Through Design competition, which for the first time will be open to all Grade 10-12 Design and Art learners throughout South Africa who are currently part of the Making the Difference Through Design programme. Sponsored by Sappi, in conjunction with Woolworths, this competition is designed to inspire learners to use their creative abilities, demonstrate them practically, and develop their awareness of the environment.

Says Woolworths' Penny Luthi: “Having successfully run this competition in the Western Cape for the past two years, we are really looking forward to receiving entries by design learners from other areas of the country. We think that this year's theme, ‘Design Cul-cha', will challenge youngsters to explore other cultures and gain a better understanding of how other people in our multi-cultural society live, as well as giving them the opportunity to explore and demonstrate their own creativity.”

Says Kathy Ormerod, Sappi's Business Development Manager: Brand Communications: “This programme is an ideal platform at furthering education, a key pillar of Sappi's CSI plan. It emphasises the importance of attracting young learners to a career in design and it paves the way for establishing the foundations for a creative, innovative and strong South African design industry.”
