The Paarl Media Group celebrated Leap Year along with some 400 clients and business associates at Nederburg on 29 February 2008.
According to the Group's Chairman, Lambert Retief, it has become somewhat of a tradition for the Group to host Leap Year celebrations - the Group's first party on the 29th of February was held in 1996 and plans are already in the pipeline for the next feast on 29 February 2012.
Themed Leapfrog to Success with Paarl Media, guests were welcomed at this year's function on the rolling lawns of Nederburg with spectacular views of the Boland mountains. Setting the scene for a night to remember, entertainment was provided by Mexican musical trio Los Gitanos while Wynland Gymnastics Club from local schools took the leapfrog theme to heart with their airborne accomplishments. Soli Philander again proved to be a hilarious Master of Ceremonies, entertaining guests with his antics and ensuring that no holy cow was left untouched.
The lucky draw prizes comprised a GPS and digital photo frame, while the main prizes for the evening had clients holding their breaths and crossing their fingers. Valued at R75 000 each, the main prizes consisted of a R50 000 discount off the winner's print bill as well as a R25 000 donation – respectively to Miqlat, a Paarl-based community organisation, and loveLife, Paarl Media's BBBEE partners. Paarl Media CEO Stephen van der Walt handed the prizes to Kenny Wallis from Young & Rubicam, Durban and Johan Axel from Homemakers Fair, Johannesburg.
Lambert Retief thanked everyone for their contributions over the past four years, which has seen the Group experience tremendous growth and make significant investments in people and the latest printing technology. The highlights for the Group over the past four years included launching Paarl Web Gauteng as a joint venture with loveLife's Kurisani Investments and installing numerous new presses at its five plants, among which the fastest magazine web press in the country at Paarl Web. The Group has also installed sufficient generators at all its plants to guarantee continuous production despite power cuts and load shedding, while significant investments have been made in equipment which ensures the plants operate in an environmentally friendly manner.
